On Wednesday, New York Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner addressed the media following his team’s exit from the playoffs. He blamed the players for their failure in the postseason and defended GM Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone. An MLB insider later shared a blunt take regarding this remarks and claimed that a “change was necessary” for them.
The Yankees missed out on the division title once again as they finished with a 93-69 record. In the American League Wild Card Series (ALWCS) they faced the Boston Red Sox for a second straight year.
They got the better of their arch rivals once again as they swept them 2-0 in the best-of-three series. This set up a best-of-five American League Division Series (ALDS) clash with the Tampa Bay Rays, who beat them to the AL East division title.
The Yanks ended up getting swept. The Rays dominated their opponents in the series and completed a 3-0 sweep to move on the American League Championship Series (ALCS).

This marked a second straight year where the Yankees had been beaten in the ALDS by a team who won the AL East. Last year, the Toronto Blue Jays eliminated them by winning the series 3-1 and went all the way to the World Series where they lost in Game 7.
The Rays are now preparing for the World Series. In the ALCS, they bounced the Cleveland Guardians 4-2. As they get ready to play in the Fall Classic against the Milwaukee Brewers, the Yankees are forced to watch from the sidelines once again.
In the end-of-season press conference on Wednesday, Steinbrenner criticized the players for their performance. He backed Boone and expressed that the players did not live up their end of the bargain.
He (Aaron Boone) got us to the playoffs, and the bottom line is, the players didn’t live up to their end of the bargain in the playoffs.

This remarks from Steinbrenner caused a stir among the Yankees fans. On social media, several of them voiced their frustrations regarding the team’s management and questioned him.
While discussing this on Foul Territory, insider Ken Rosenthal claimed he understands the fans’ frustration. He then shared a blunt take and claimed a change was necessary in this case while questioning the decisions of the team.
Well, who picks the hitters? That’s Cashman. Who manages the hitters? That’s Boone. I don’t like to advocate for people getting fired. But in this particular case, it sure seemed like change was necessary.

Boone will return as the team’s manager in 2027. This will be the final year of his contract. As for Cashman, the team did renew his deal. He will return as the general manager for a 30th season.
Hal Steinbrenner claims Yankees still have “World Series or Bust” mentality
The wait for title no.28 goes on for the New York Yankees. This season the fell short again in the ALDS. Their repeated failures have led to many wondering, whether they still have the “World Series or Bust” mentality. Hal Steinbrenner claims they still have this.

There was a time where the Yankees were considered favorites to win the World Series every year. After all, they are the most successful time in MLB history.
However, things have changed a bit in recent times. While every year they are among the favorites to win, they are not ranked No.1.
The loss this year extended their championship drought to 17 years. Since their last triumph in 2009, they have reached the World Series just once (2024), where they lost 4-1 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
That’s absolutely what we expect. That is our mission. That is our goal. Yes, we failed at the goal this year, but that is always our goal, which is why we put so much effort and resources into the roster every offseason.

The Yankees did receive some backlash before the start of the season for their roster moves. Instead of big money free agent signings, they focused more on bringing some of their core players back.
The team currently has one of the best pitching staff in the league led by Cam Schlittler, who is the favorite to win the American League Cy Young Award this year. Meanwhile, they did miss Aaron Judge in the postseason as he was sidelined with a calf strain.
It will be interesting to see what changes they make to the roster in this coming offseason.
