“Can’t wait for this breakdown” – Twitter flares up as Corbin Carroll gets SLAMMED by pitch twice through Matt Strahm

Getting drilled by a fastball in baseball is the one thing a batter hopes to avoid. Sometimes the hits are unintentional as the ball gets released from the hands of the pitcher. A similar situation took place on Monday night as rising star Corbin Carroll was stuck by the pitch not once but twice by Matt Strahm. This led to angry reactions from his manager Torey Lovullo, who was ejected from the game after the benches had been cleared.
The incident took place in the third innings as the Arizona D-Backs trailed the Philadelphia Phillies 5-1. Carroll had already been stuck by the pitch during his first appearance at the plate. He once again found himself being hit by the pitch of Matt Strahm. This led to a war of words between Lovullo and Phillies catcher J.T Realmuto.
The D-Backs coach was clearly unhappy with what he had seen. He rushed out of his technical area to have a word with the home-plate umpire. This scene sparked the benches to be cleared as the bullpen guys also joined in. After various back-and-forth of words, Lovullo was given his marching orders by umpire Vic Carapazza. Perhaps to avoid further drama, the Phillies pulled off pitcher Strahm after just 2.2 innings.
Twitter reactions as tensions boil over between the D-Backs and Phillies
While everyone loves a good competitive fight, scenes like these are not usually fruitful to watch. Baseball has a long history of such “benches clear” incidents, which stirred up further drama. The D-Backs likely took note of some of this, as they kick-started their comeback. The NL West leaders scored eight runs after this event.
The Phillies tried to make a late rally but eventually ran out of steam. Corbin Carroll, who was named the NL player of the week, has been a break-out star of the year so far. Twitter as of late has become a platform to share their opinions and thoughts. This occurrence between the teams has received some mixed reactions as fans have called out Carroll. Here are a few of them:
The D-Backs have been one of the surprise packages of this season. In a season where big names have failed to live up to the expectations placed on them, the other teams have picked up. The D-Backs are currently three and a half games ahead of the LA Dodgers in their division series race. The team finished with an abysmal record of 74-88 last season. This year they have a real chance to finish ahead of their division rivals if they continue to play like this.
