American baseball pitcher Jacob deGrom break up with his former team the New York Mets to sign a massive deal with Texas Rangers worth $185 million. The deal will run for 5 years with a 6-year option increasing the contract value to $222 million.
His former team, the Mets have been trying to lure him in throughout the offseason. They did hope that the 34-year-old pitcher would sign up with them, only to find out about his shocking disappearance. Unfortunately for them, they’ll now be seeing Jacob don the Rangers jersey.
The Mets offered him contract value close to his other pursuers, but now it’s all in vain. As Jacob bolted towards Rangers, his former team found out that the pitcher had been in deep waters with the opposition party. Even before the contract was announced, they’d been all cozied up.

For now, Max Scherzer is on top of the roster list for the Mets. They’ll have to look for someone who can patch up the hole left by their 2x NL CY Young Award winner. Though Jacob deGrom suffered from injuries, his market rate this season didn’t fall short.
He’s been dealing with forearm and shoulder injuries which restricted the player during his matches. Before tasting free water he rejected the Mets’ $30.5 million deal. Rangers GM Chris Young noted, “We acknowledge the risk, but we also acknowledge that in order to get great players, there is a risk and a cost associated with that”.
“And one we feel like is worth taking with a player of Jacob’s caliber.” Apart from Jacob, the Rangers didn’t shy away from spending money this last offseason. They penned down Corey Seager to a $325 million contract for 10 years, and Marcus Semien to a 7-year $175 million contract.
After the Winter Meetings, the team will introduce Jacob deGrom in a news conference hosted at Global Life Field, which is next week. Young commented, “It fits in so many ways in terms of what we need”.
“He’s a tremendous person. I have a number of close friends and teammates who played with Jacob and love him. I think he’s going to be just a perfect fit for our clubhouse and our fans.”
