According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Seattle Mariners rookie superstar Julio Rodriguez has allegedly signed to an extension with the Mariners that could end up being the most expensive deal in Major League Baseball history. First to announce that a deal was imminent, ESPN’s Jeff Passan added that the 14-year extension would include $210 million in guaranteed compensation.

Rodrguez will also be given a complete no-trade clause, Rosenthal continued. Rodriguez might end up collecting more than $450 million in the agreement, according to MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez. The most expensive MLB contract at the moment is Mike Trout’s $426.5 million deal with the Los Angeles Angels.

The $212 million extension Austin Riley inked with the Atlanta Braves earlier this month is exactly in line with the guaranteed value of Rodrguez’s contract. Riley’s contract with the Braves is for 10 years, and it doesn’t seem to include the significant raises that Rodriguez is eligible for throughout the life of his pact.

If the number doesn’t start with a two, then Julio Rodriguez shouldn’t even think about it

The age at which both players signed their deals is another significant distinction. Riley, who is 25 years old, would have been a free agent following the 2025 campaign. Rodriguez, who is 21 years old, was a team asset through the 2028 campaign. Passan highlighted Fernando Tatis Jr.’s 14-year, $340 million contract with the San Diego Padres earlier this week during an appearance on The Mike Salk Sports Show on Seattle Sports 710 AM as a possible comparison for what a Rodrguez extension may entail.

“I think if the number doesn’t start with a two, then Julio Rodríguez shouldn’t even think about it,” Passan said. “Here’s the thing, we’re looking at a generationally excellent talent. We’re looking at a personality who is somebody around whom the franchise can build. We’re looking at a guy who, because of the age at which he ascended to the big leagues, is lined up to be a free agent as young as anyone in recent memory.”
