“Almost slammed incautiously” – Kevin Gausman viciously smacked on leg by Wander Franco in frightening moment
Kevin Gausman
Toronto Blue Jays fans had to hold their breath as Kevin Gausman was viciously smacked by a line drive off the bat by Wander Franco. As soon as the contact took place, the former went down on the floor, holding his leg whilst screaming in pain. What’s even worse? Gausman had to be eventually removed from the action-packed game due to a right knee contusion.
With the Toronto Blue Jays trying to catch the New York Yankees, this will surely be a huge blow as they were hoping to fire with all guns blazing. The team and its management feared that Kevin Gausman would be missing out for weeks but fortunately for the Jays the X-Raya came out negative. Moreover, the team’s morale improved when Gausman stood up on his own feet and limped off the field.
Given the ferocity of the hit, Kevin Gausman did end up on the right side after the hit. Given that the 31-year-old has finally made his form come to the best, his presence can be crucial in deciding the journey of his team in the 2022 season. Gausman didn’t walk a single batter or allow a home run through his first five starts of the campaign. Interestingly, CY Young was the last pitcher to accomplish the same feat back in 1903.

Till when will Kevin Gausman be sidelined?
“Kevin Gausman has got a contusion and we’ll go from there,” Manager Charlie Montoyo said between games, discussing Gausman and his injury. “I was hoping it wasn’t anything worse. He’s one of our best pitchers. I think he was wearing high-top (shoes) and that helped a bit.
“That was a great job by Lawrence (on three days’ rest from a start with the Bisons) to give us that much, almost six innings. When I went to take him out, he said: ‘I’ve got more’. I could ask him to give me an inning (in the evening), and he’d say yes, he’s that kind of guy.”
Talking about the stats from the 2022 season, he is 6-6 with a 2.93 ERA (134 ERA+), 1.69 FIP, 1.24 WHIP and 97 strikeouts against 15 walks in 86 innings this season.
“That’s baseball,” Montoya concluded. “We’re playing good ball and suddenly one of your best pitchers goes down. OK, then we have to go over our needs, a second game today, one more tomorrow, and no days off coming up. Good thing Lawrence gave us those good innings, then Max Castillo, with 40-something pitches, got us the last four outs today.”
