In the long history of baseball, a debate regarding which is more important, batting or pitching has often flared up. Over the course of the century, both sets of players have achieved extraordinary feats. From hitting cycles to throwing a perfect game, both tasks are daunting to achieve. However, it has always been the pitchers being credited with the win or loss. On Sunday night, White Sox Lance Lynn achieved a rare feat but still had to settle with a loss.

In the match against the Seattle Mariners, Lynn was breathing fire. The pitcher managed to rake up sixteen strikeouts to his name. This extraordinary feat tied him up for the most by any pitcher in franchise history. The last person to collect 16 strikeouts in one game was Spencer Strider of the Atalanta Braves. He managed this tally against the Colorado Rockies in September 2022.

Lynn was as dangerous as it can get on the mound. The southpaw threw 114 pitches. As per data provided by StatCast, Lynn collected 33 swinging strikes, showing his grip and skills. While he held his end of the bargain, the offense of the White Sox crumbled. It was as if Lynn was playing against them.

In the seven innings he threw, Lynn gave up three runs through four hits. The Mariners might have a difficult time in facing him, they just managed to get the job done. As a result of this, despite his best efforts, Lynn could not save the White Sox from the jaws of defeat.

Prior to this historic feat by Lynn, the record of sixteen strikeouts belonged to Jack Harshman. The former player set this record all the way back in 1954. He achieved this feat against the Boston Red Sox. Apart from this, the White Sox have seen five other fifteen strikeout games. Four of these come from the duo of Chris Sale and Ed Walsh (two each). The other one was from Jim Scott.

Speaking of stats, Lynn is now 4-8 in fifteen starts this season. The 36-year-old veteran has so far had a disappointing season with a high ERA. There have also been rumors of him being potentially named as a trade candidate. After this performance though, the team might change their plans regarding him.

The series loss against the Mariners put them in with a struggling record of 31-42. The team has once again lost Liam Hendriks to the injured list after the closer made his return recently. They now come up against the Texas Rangers, the second-best side this season. White Sox will surely need to regroup and try to work together as a team if they were to turn such historic moments into victory.
