“Just a regular player”: Manny Ramirez probes Derek Jeter’s potential with cheeky remark
Manny Ramirez and Derek Jeter
Manny Ramirez, the Red Sox Hall of Famer, was invited to Monday’s game to throw out the first pitch and receive his Red Sox Hall of Fame plaque. The plague was given to him by a close friend and former teammate David Ortiz. Manny Ramirez had a 19-season long career out of which he played 8 years with the Boston Red Sox. He homered 555 home runs in his Major League Baseball career.
After receiving his Hall of Fame plague, Manny Ramirez went up to the NESN Broadcasting booth where he was accompanied by Kevin Millar and Dennis Eckersley. Amongst many other conversations, rose a conversation about Derek Jeter – The New York Yankees shortstop Hall of Famer.
Manny Ramirez was telling the broadcasters about how helpful it was for his to make a move from Cleveland to Boston as it gave him the chance to propel his full potential. But then he made a cheeky comment on Derek Jeter which became a center of attention for many to dig. “You gotta understand this: If you haven’t played in Boston or New York, you’re not in the big leagues,” said Manny Ramirez.

The conversation that followed after his first remark regarding Boston and New York franchises-
“It’s like if you put Jeter in Kansas City in those years, he was just a regular player,” said Ramirez.
“You put him on that big stage, you hit .400 in the postseason for many, many years, he’s the greatest in the history,” said Millar.
“He’s the greatest,” Manny Ramirez responded.

“It makes you better,” Ramirez added of playing baseball in Boston. “Because you’ve got to be ready. Because they will let you know. They will let you know when you’re not right. To be honest with you, when I was with Cleveland, I was playing and I was a good player. But when I came to Boston. I got better because the fans, they will let you know that you weren’t playing right. They push you.”
This conversation resulted into people going deranged on twitter, quoting Manny Ramirez’s “just a regular player” (without full context) about Derek Jeter. He did praise the fans of Red Sox but he led to that particular statement after taking a shot at Jeter. Later, the conversation spring to a conclusion that although Ramirez made the statement it was only honoring the Yankee legend.
