Just a few days after controversy surrounding rosin usage by New York Yankees pitcher Domingo German, Max Scherzer paid the price. The veteran New York Mets pitcher was ejected from the game and has been suspended for another ten games for using rosin while pitching. He can appeal his suspension.

This incident marks the third time a pitcher has been ejected from the game for using foreign substances. Caleb Smith and Hector Santiago were both removed after the game after the umpires detected the use of foreign substances. An interesting fact is that in both previous incidents, Phil Cuzzi was the umpire.

Scherzer gave his marching orders just before the start of the bottom half of the fourth inning. He was left stunned following this action by umpire Phil Cuzzi. In the post-match conference, Scherzer once again pleaded not guilty. “They touch my hand; they say it’s sticky. Yes, it is because it’s sweat and rosin. “It’s too sticky’ and they threw me out because of that,” he said.

Max Scherez can appeal his suspension. If he is found to be not guilty, then his suspension could be revoked. He had already gone through a sticky substances check in the second inning. Just before the bottom half of the third inning, he was asked to change his glove. He had pitched three scoreless innings, giving up one hit and two walks. He had also picked up three strikeouts.

Thankfully for the Mets, his removal did not cost them the game. He was replaced by Jimmy Yacabonis, who would record the win. Yacabonis pitched 2 2/3 innings allowing just two hits and one run in his side’s 5-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Interestingly, this is not the first time Scherzer has dealt with sticky substances check.

In June 2021, he underwent multiple substances check while pitching for the Washington Nationals. The three-time Cy Young Award winner and eight-time All-Star is currently playing his 16th season in baseball. He started this game with a 2-1 record with a 4.41 ERA. His suspension could be extended after trial if he is found guilty. The Mets will likely be hoping to avoid that.

Next up for them is another California-based team, the San Francisco Giants. After taking the series against the Dodgers, the Mets will be looking to continue their momentum and pick up another series win. They are two games behind the Braves in the NL East standings with a 12-7 record. It promises to be another classic race for the top spot.
