Another day, another disappointing performance from the New York Mets. This has been the routine of the Mets in the 2023 season. In games where they are comfortably winning, something goes horribly wrong for them. This then leads to another slip and they end up losing. On Sunday against the Philadelphia Phillies, the exact same thing happened again.
They started off strong once again. Home runs from Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso put them in the driving seat. Though starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco had a difficult time, they were still winning till the eighth inning. After that they just imploded, giving up runs through infield error, walking and hitting two batters.
This disastrous outing occurred through two relief pitchers, Jeff Brigham, and Josh Walker. The former gave up back-to-back batters with hits to allow the bases to be filled with tying and go-ahead runs. Three walks, two hit-by-pitches, and an infield fielding error cost the Mets another game as fans become more furious. The Phillies scored those four runs through just one hit, which sums up the season for the Mets.
The Mets had the option of experienced David Robertson, but manager Buck Showalter did not option it. As per stats, the New York-based side has lost 15 of their 20 matches. Another figure which hurts them is in connection with their inability to protect a lead. This was the 12th time this season that the Mets lost despite leading by six runs.
NY Mets in serious contention of missing out playoffs
There is no denying that the New York Mets are struggling for consistent performances. This whole season has been a low for them. Despite having a star-studded lineup, the big names have failed to keep up with regular good outings. Their bullpen consists of two former Cy Young award winners in the form of Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer. However, it is their other pitching stuff which has disappointed the most.
Adam Ottavino and Brooks Raley were not available for the game. Showalter had the option to use David Robertson but was perhaps saving him for a safe situation. He later regretted this decision as he was given his marching orders in the ninth. To find takeaways from such a result is hard enough. Twitter would go on to blame the whole team for this blow-up. Here are some reactions.
They will now return to NY to face the Milwaukee Brewers. The visitors come into that game taking the series against the Cleveland Guardians. With their current state of form, the Brewers are likely to succeed against the Mets. The New York side has a lot of reworking to do in the upcoming days to salvage the season.
