The regular season of the MLB has come to an end. This has also brought an end to the misery year of the New York Mets and the tenure of coach Buck Showalter. The 67-year-old informed about this development before the last game of the season against the Philadelphia Phillies.
The coach made an announcement that he would not be returning to the team for the next season. Shortly after this announcement, the Mets confirmed the news. It was a challenging season for the New York side, resulting in an early elimination. Surprisingly, he was let go from his position with one season still left on his three-year contract.
After the Mets missed out on the National League East title through a tie-breaker to the Atlanta Braves, they suffered an early postseason exit. The expectation this year was once again high as the team was expected to compete for the title and mount a serious challenge this year. The franchise also brought in Justin Verlander to form a formidable partnership with fellow ace Max Scherzer.
However, things came crashing down for them. The side struggled in every department and failed to gel together as a team. The baseball community received a major shock when the team traded away both their aces before the deadline day. As positive results continued to elude them, fans started protesting against owner Steve Cohen and asked for the sacking of Showalter.
Buck Showalter receives standing ovation before final game as NY Mets coach
Sometimes things just do not work the way they are hoped. Despite spending huge money on transfers and having the highest payroll in MLB this year, the New York Mets failed to achieve their goals. The poor results were put on the players and their coach Buck Showalter. They though gave him a standing ovation before the final home game and thanked him for his contribution.
Showalter took over the reins as Mets manager in December 2021. He would lead the Mets to a 101-61 finish in his first full season. For his work during the 2022 season, he was named the National League Manager of the Year.
“I was honored to get a chance to manage a second New York team. I’m proud of what the Mets did,” he was quoted by AP. He later added, “I wish things could have gone better this season because the Mets fans deserve that.” Showalter concluded by saying that this was not the ending he wanted but he still loves the city and the players.
Steve Cohen, the owner of the Mets is now in search of a fifth manager in six years. It is likely going to be a difficult task for Showalter’s successor to turn things around. The Mets finished the season with a record of 74-87 with one game against the Miami Marlins unfinished. As the Marlins had already qualified for the next round, the MLB announced on Sunday that the game would not restart and would remain 2-1 in favor of them.
