“F**king Incredible”- Ryne Nelson and Hunter Brown delivered scoreless outing with 5+ strikeouts in MLB debut

Ryne Nelson and Hunter Brown

Major League Baseball’s future is undoubtedly in capable hands. On Monday, Ryne Nelson of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Hunter Brown of the Houston Astros both made their MLB debuts and both appeared to be seasoned veterans.

Nelson allowed just four hits while striking out seven batters in seven scoreless innings. At one point, he retired 17 consecutive batters. Brown pitched six innings of shutout play while striking out five batters while giving up three hits and one walk.

It was the first occasion in the modern period that two pitchers each pitched a scoreless inning with at least five strikeouts in their MLB debut on the same day, according to Stats by Stats.

Right-hander Ryne Nelson of the Diamondbacks experienced anxiety the evening before making his major league debut and again on Monday morning. However, he claimed that by the time he took the mound at Petco Park later in the afternoon, the butterflies had mostly disappeared.

When Nelson faced the San Diego Padres, he didn’t appear uncomfortable. He didn’t appear intimidated or overpowered. He actually had the appearance of someone who had been pitching in the major leagues for some time, 30-plus times a year or more.

In a 5-0 victory over the San Diego Padres, Nelson cruised through seven tight innings, turning in not just the most impressive debut in team history but also one of the most impressive performances in baseball.

“I just tried to take it all in, tried to embrace the moment and have fun with it.” Nelson said. “I tried to just treat it like any other game. I know that’s pretty cliché, but it really helped.”

Nelson made history by pitching more than six innings without allowing a run in his debut for the Diamondbacks. His seven strikeouts were a rookie Diamondbacks starter record high.

Hunter Brown spent some time walking around the field before the game on Monday because he had never actually been on it at Minute Maid Park. It was time for MLB Pipeline’s top prospect for the Astros, who had worked his entire life to get this moment, to take it all in.

Brown seems unconcerned by his surroundings or the sizable 35,162 Labor Day audience that was cheering him on at all times. The “Motor City Madman” took the field to Ted Nugent’s “Stranglehold,” and then the young Detroiter made some of his own music with an electrifying Major League debut.

The 24-year-old right-hander pitched six scoreless innings, giving up three hits, one walk, and five strikeouts while leading the Astros to a 1-0 victory over the Rangers in game one of their series.

He started the game with a fastball at 97.4 mph that Marcus Semien took for a strike, and he never let up. “I was definitely nervous,” Brown said. “As the outing went on, [the nerves] subsided. Overall, I was definitely nervous.”

Given the manner in which Brown controlled the mound and the situation, you would never have known it. To begin his career, he struck out Corey Seager swinging and Semien looking.

He didn’t allow a hit until ninth-hole hitter Bubba Thompson singled to right field with two outs in the third. He had 10 groundouts on 79 pitches sent his way.
