“Now that’s a breakthrough”- Shohei Ohtani establishes himself as the 4th Japanese-born player to reach 200 strike out mark

Shohei Ohtani

Shohei Ohtani became the first player in AL/NL history to have 200 strikeouts on the mound and more than 30 home runs on the plate in a single season. With a career best of 14 wins, Shohei Ohtani lead the Los Angeles Angels into a 4-2 win against the Minnesota Twins.

“That’s a big milestone for me,” Ohtani said through interpreter Ippei Mizuhara. “It just shows I’ve been able to consistently take the mound every sixth day.” Even with 34 homeruns, 28 doubles, 200 strikeouts and 90 RBI this season, Shohei Ohtani found it difficult to adjust to a wet mound.

He said : “I was having trouble with my landing spot, so I was afraid I might slip a little bit,” Ohtani said. “But this is going to happen in the future, so it’s something I have to get used to and work on. But I never really got used to and work on. But I never really got used to it, and it showed with the six walks I gave up. I wasn’t really feeling all that great.”

On Friday at Target Field, Shohei Ohtani strikes out Gary Sanchez on a 2-2 curveball in the fourth inning, to join Yu Darvish, Hideo Nomo and Daisuke Matsuzaka to become the fourth Japanese born player to get to the 200 strike out mark. Ohtani also became the first player in Angel’s history since Jared Weaver to reach this mark.

Carlos Correa comments on Shohei Ohtani saying “I think he is the best player to ever cross the lines in Major League history.” “It’s unbelievable what he’s doing,” said right fielder Taylor Ward who homered twice to reach 21 on the year. “He comes in every day and does his work. It’s just impressive to see his routine every day.”
