At this point, there should be no surprise that Shohei Ohtani is too good at baseball. The hottest free agent in the MLB right now, the two-way sensation keeps on setting new records. He has now won this third consecutive Edgar Martinez Outstanding Designated Hitter award.
The award named after the legendary Designated Hitter Edgar Martinez is given to the best DH after the season. As the name suggests, the player who had an outstanding year while playing as the DH gets this award. Ohtani had another great season as he dominated the other players in this department yet again.

The DH is a position given to a player who bats but does not field in the game. As Ohtani pitches as well, he is qualified as a DH and never takes the glove to the field somewhere else. He has now matched Hall of Famer David Ortiz as the second player to win it on three successive occasions. “Big Papi” won this award on eight occasions while winning it for five years running between 2003-2007.
Another victory for Shohei Ohtani in an outstanding 2023 season
At the moment there is hardly any player in baseball standing ahead of Shohei Ohtani in the rankings. The 29-year-old Japanese star has somewhat stunned the fans and experts of this sport with his incredible pool of talent. On Thursday he claimed another victory as he picked as he named the Edgar Martinez Outstanding DH of the Year for a third time running.
This comes after he was named as the unanimous American League MVP for the second time this season. Last season he finished second in the MVP rankings, finishing behind Aaron Judge. He could have won these two awards for a third consecutive time had it not been for Judge’s astonishing 2022 season.

As a DH, Ohtani excelled in every aspect and finished above everyone. His 44 home runs, 102 runs, 20 stolen bases with a slugging percentage of.654 and an OPS of 1.066 saw him finish at the top of this respective categories for a DH. He finished the season batting with an average of .285.
These were just his batting stats. He excelled as a pitcher as well but an injury to his elbow saw him pitch less. There have been speculations that Ohtani might not pitch in the 2024 season. If it turns out to be true, it would be a massive blow for him and whichever team signs him, but he could get more time to focus on his hitting.
