Angela Lee is one of the best female fighters outside the UFC. Angela is known for her world-class BJJ skills. She fought twice in 2022 but has yet to enter the ring. The possible reason for the delay happened due to the tragic death of her younger sister. Her sister, Victoria Lee, died on December 26, 2023. The fighter opened up about her history in a recent interview, including a car crash in 2017.
Lee said, “My car crash in November 2017 was not an accident. It was a suicide attempt. I was getting ready for my last title defense of the year, things started to snowball for me. Pressure, stress, and expectations all began to build up. I had tunnel vision and thought that this upcoming fight was the most important thing in my life.” (H/T The Players Tribune)
In the past, Lee had struggled on the weight scale. Making weight remains an important aspect of combat sports. Angela Lee felt that not making championship weight could derail her career and tried to harm herself to take herself out of the equation. At first, she tried to give herself a concussion. When that failed, she drove her car and crashed it.
She revealed that she was in a better place these days. However, tough days can come at times. Her younger brother, Christian Lee, has also not fought in a while. The siblings might sit out this year to focus on their mental health before returning in 2024. Angela and Christian are two of the most accomplished sibling duos in MMA.
Angela Lee opens up about the death of her younger sister
Victoria Lee is the younger sister of Christian and Angela Lee. Victoria made her MMA debut in 2021. She fought three times in 2021 and successfully defeated her opponents. Unfortunately, she passed away in December 2022.
Her elder sister, Angela, talked about her death in an interview. Angela said, “On December 26, 2022, my younger sister, Victoria, took her own life.” She did not reveal much about the circumstances. However, she confirmed that it was suicide. The tragic suicide affected the family deeply.
The BJJ artist has started to focus on helping others with mental health issues. Mental health remains an important aspect of MMA. Many MMA fighters have opened up about mental health. There should be more focus on mental health in MMA. Hopefully, in the future, the fighters get the help they require.
