Greta Thunberg has finally broken her silence on Andrew Tate. Greta and Andrew Tate went on a war of words on Twitter days before the Tate brothers were arrested in Romania for human rights trafficking. The Swedish activist recently was interviewed on ABC news where she was asked why Andrew Tate decided to start a feud with her.

Greta explained that it was all done to gain attention. She replied, “They feel so threatened or they feel like their worldview is so threatened by people like me, climate activists and environmental activists speaking up, that they feel like they need to silence us and mock us, etc. But that, I think, should be seen as a positive sign. Because that means we’re actually having an impact.”

She believed it would be better if people like Andrew Tate spend their free time for the betterment of society rather than trolling people online. The feud between the two began back in December of last year when Andrew Tate made a tweet tagging Greta bragging about his luxury car.  In reply to which the Swedish activist made a savage reply tweeting, “Yes, please do enlighten me. email me at smalld***energy @getalife.com .”

Tate and his brother had been under investigation since April of last year, and they were both detained in December on accusations of rape, establishing an organized crime syndicate and human trafficking. However, they have not yet received formal charges for any crimes.

Despite Greta’s claims on why Andrew Tate started a feud with her, it seems both Greta Thunbreg and Andrew Tate have benefitted from their online feud.

Following their Twitter fight, Greta Thunberg and Andrew Tate saw a jump in followers. According to the data analytics website Social Blade, Tate’s account gained almost 108,000 followers on Twitter on the day of the dispute, a significant increase over the usual growth of about 40,000 per day for the prior week. That same day, Thunberg’s account gained 163,000 followers after losing hundreds of followers the previous day.

Following the disputes, some users drew attention to the way accounts can capitalize on one another’s fame by igniting a conflict that garners media attention. This has been a common strategy of influencers and politicians to spark a feud with someone more recognizable to garner more followers.
