In Short
  • Rumors of PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi attending the 2026 IPL final in Ahmedabad have been debunked.
  • The ICC's annual board meeting will be held virtually in Ahmedabad on May 30-31 due to logistical issues.
  • Naqvi is not expected to travel to India, as he will attend the meeting remotely.

Rumors that Pakistan Cricket Board chief Mohsin Naqvi had been invited to attend the 2026 IPL final in Ahmedabad, which is set to coincide with the ICC’s Annual Board Meeting, erupted a few days ago. Nevertheless, these reports have since been refuted.

It followed the ICC’s decision to call off its annual board and committee meetings in Doha, Qatar, due to the escalating conflict across West Asia. It was originally scheduled for March 25-27. Needing a swift alternative, the ICC announced that the meetings would be relocated to Ahmedabad, India, scheduling them for May 30 and 31, which coincides with the 2026 IPL final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in the city.

The meeting, set to bring together directors, chief executives, and senior leadership, would deliberate on key matters, including broadcasting rights. Therefore, top administrators, particularly from the cricketing boards of the Test-playing nations, are required to attend the meet.

This led to speculative reports, which claimed that PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi would be travel to India, and that the ultimate authorization would be determined by the country’s prime minister.

Rumors also circulated that the Board of Control for Cricket in India had directly invited the PCB chairman to attend the 2026 IPL final in Ahmedabad, leveraging its coincidence with the high-profile ICC meeting. Given the tense relations between the governments of India and Pakistan, as well as their respective cricket boards, administrative sources worked to debunk GeoSuper’s claims.

It was confirmed that the BCCI had never extended an invitation, and had Naqvi traveled to India, his sole purpose would have been to attend the meet. In fact, Mohsin Naqvi is not expected to set foot in India and will attend the Board of Directors meeting virtually under standard ICC provisions. At least two other international board members who might not be able to travel to India due to logistical limits are expected to join Naqvi virtually.

The PCB chief is not a well-received figure in India, partly due to his role in the unresolved Asia Cup 2025 trophy row. Naqvi has, at times, even presented the Pakistan Super League as a rival to the Indian Premier League, making his final attendance unlikely.

Gujarat Titans suffer disappointing defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders

Firmly in the race to secure an IPL play-offs spot, the Gujarat Titans’ hopes, however, took a slight hit against the Kolkata Knight Riders. GT suffered a disappointing 29-run defeat to KKR at the Eden Gardens, in what turned out to be a high-scoring thriller.

Batting first, the home side put up a massive first innings total of 247/2. Finn Allen’s blistering 93 runs off 35 balls, which included 4 fours and 10 sixes, set the base for KKR, before Angkrish Raghuvanshi scored an unbeaten 82 off 44 balls, and Cameron Green chipped in with 52 off 28, to take the Knights to their highest total of the season. For GT, Mohammed Siraj and R Sai Kishore picked up a wicket each.

Despite losing just four wickets during the chase, GT could only finish with 218/4 in the end, falling short by 29 runs. Shubman Gill scored a remarkable 85 runs off 49 balls, while Jos Buttler (57 off 35) and Sai Sudharsan (53* off 28) contributed, but it all went in vain. On a surface that favored batters, KKR’s Sunil Narine was named Player of the Match for returning with figures of 2/29 in his four-over spell.

The loss confirms that GT have not yet officially qualified for the play-offs and must win against CSK to secure a spot in the final four. Conversely, KKR will aim to conclude the season with a total of 15 points, maintaining a distant possibility of qualification.
