“If he makes first, second or third, his salary triples.” Enea Bastianini’s manager reveals terms of ‘incentive based’ contract

“If he makes first, second or third, his salary triples.” Enea Bastianini’s manager reveals terms of ‘incentive based’ contract

Enea Bastianini

After an impressive 3rd place finish in the 2022 MotoGP season. Enea Bastianini was announced as a Ducati Corse rider for the 2023 season, replacing Jack Miller. Bastianini will be partnering reigning MotoGP World Champion, Francesco Bagnaia. The call up to the Ducati factory team is definitely a promotion many in the paddock were seeking.

Reportedly, Bastianini’s contract is based around results. That is, a greater base salary will be awarded if Bastianini finishes the season in the top 3. To achieve that target, Bastianini initially needs to beat his teammate. In producing such a contract, Ducati seem to have inadvertently manufactured a rivalry between their pilots. While reigning Champion Bagnaia will do everything in his power to retain his crown, he may face some competiton from the other side of the garage.

Notably, Bastianini has already shown a willingness to disrupt Bagnaia’s reign. This was clear when the pair got into a hard battle at Misano. Bastianini’s manager has expressed his concern over the situation of team orders and placement based incentivization. Intra-team friction is expected considering the state of the contracts and Bastianini’s hunger for his first MotoGP World Championship Title.

In a recent interview with Crash.Net, Bastianini’s manager, Carlo Pernat, revealed details about his client’s contract. “The contract expires at the end of 2024. If he makes first, second or third, his salary triples. Between first and second there is a big difference.” he said. Pernat also expects an on-track rivalry to begin amongst the two Italians.

“At a certain moment there was talk of teamwork, but at that moment a dualism was created. Enea was playing for the world championship, or at least [within] the first three positions. In the financial field it is worth a lot of money.” he continued. “Enea is a tough guy, he is not there and will not be there at team games. They are two completely different riders: Bagnaia is fast and consistent, Bastianini is more like Casey Stoner, a tightrope walker, overtaking clean but at times when it is more difficult to pass. It will be a good battle, but it’s normal.” Pernat concluded.

It’s clear to see that both riders want to finish this season above the other. While that will become a reality for only one, it will be interesting to see how the team dynamics play out considering Bastianini is in for a big payday if he manages to beat Bagnaia. The question that remains is, Will they be able to work as a team initially to secure the Constructor’s title for Ducati?
