Mooney VR46 Racing Team rider Marco Bezzecchi has come a long way this season. The Italian rider has proved that he is capable of taking the fight to the top runners in MotoGP following his bid for the title. The VR46 rider had come into Assen with one goal and that being to beat Pecco Bagnaia. While that did not exactly happen, Marco explains why that was the case.

Marco Bezzecchi was on a roll throughout the race weekend. From practice to qualifying and even the sprint race, the VR46 team rider proved that he was a step ahead of the grid. Many expected for the Italian to win it all in Assen following his performance throughout the weekend. He had lined up on pole position for Sunday’s main race. However, things didn’t go exactly as planned for the Italian rider.

Marco Bezzecchi chose to go with the soft rear tyre option for the sprint race as it would give an advantage. However, the VR46 rider also felt that the soft could last in Sunday’s race too. Nevertheless, it was a gamble that the Italian chose not to take. It would have been interesting to see what the VR46 rider could have done if he had gone with the gamble. The cons of the risk were too high for him to take it to beat Pecco.

When asked if getting through on Brad Binder for P2 prior to Bagnaia opening up a one second lead would have changed the outcome, here is what the VR46 racing team rider had to say. “I don’t know because Pecco was stronger than me with the medium [rear tyre]. I already knew that I could race with the soft but it was too big of a risk. I didn’t want to throw everything in the bin because this weekend we were having a really good time,” he said.

While Pecco Bagnaia eventually ended Marco Bezzecchi’s hopes of getting a clean sweep in Assen, Marco was still in reach as he finished P2. If he would have taken the risk, there was a high chance of him losing the podium and missing out on valuable points in his championship fight with Pecco. The Ducati factory rider currently leads the champion with 194 points while Marco is at 158 points and a close third behind Jorge Martin with 159 points to his name.
