“Motorsport is not like football!” Dutch racer, Christijan Albers criticizes the “terrible” booing of Lewis Hamilton in battle with Max Verstappen
Lewis Hamilton
Christijan Albers, the former Formula 1 driver has recently shared his view on the behavior of fans towards Lewis Hamilton during the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
It has been stated in motorsport.com that Christijan Albers believes Formula1 is not like football and feels fans should not unnecessarily shout or boo during Grand Prix weekends as it is not good for the sport or the drivers. It is something that irritates him immensely and wishes for it to stop, just stop so that drivers can get their heads right before the races.
During the last race of the 2021 Formula1 season, Lewis Hamilton was at the center of all the booing that was thrown his way by the fans. Even after the end of the Abu Dhabi qualifying session where Lewis was P2 behind Max Verstappen, Lewis was jeered by fans during his post-qualifying interview.
Christijan Albers on the tumultuous time that Lewis Hamilton had to go through during Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
Christijan while talking about the difficult time that Lewis Hamilton had at the hands of the fans said, “Again with qualifying there was a shout. In all the years that I have been active in motorsport, that has never happened. Once, in Austria, in the year that Barrichello had to pass Schumacher. Motorsport is not like football. We are fans of everyone, of course, a little more of Max Verstappen, but this does not belong in motorsport. I think it is really terrible.”
On one hand, Christijan was very pleased with seeing Max Verstappen become the Formula 1 world champion but on the other hand, he was very disappointed with the behavior of some fans. He believes this never used to happen when he was in Formula1 and feels that fans should be more considerate before hurling abuse towards the Formula1 stars.
Formula 1 is on the upwards trajectory as far as popularity is concerned and with the new regulations kicking in during the upcoming season, it is only going to get more popular. If Christijan’s statement is taken into account, he is very pleased with the popularity that the sport is gaining and just wishes that fans become more understanding as the mental pressure takes a heavy toll on the Formula1 drivers.
