Former Australia cricketer Brad Hogg and full-time cricket analyst, recently compared the two of the greatest captains of all time in cricket, Ricky Ponting and MS Dhoni. Both led their teams to height while handling the leadership role.

When a fan asked Hogg who is a better batter and captain between Dhoni and Ponting, Hogg said both the former batters had different roles to play. But on captaincy, Hogg put Dhoni “slightly in front” because the Captain Cool had “more politics to deal with” in Indian cricket. As for Ponting, he had “experienced cricketers who knew their roles“.

“Ricky Ponting definitely the better batter. Very difficult too…but they play different roles as well. MS Dhoni is a brilliant finisher so they play are playing different roles,” said Hogg in a live Q&A session on his YouTube Channel.

“Ricky Ponting had a wonderful team. MS Dhoni had a wonderful team too. Both did exceptionally well. Both have got a fantastic records. You cannot separate them. MS Dhoni probably had more politics to deal with in Indian cricket than Ricky Ponting did. That probably puts Dhoni slightly in front. Ponting had a lot of experienced cricketers around who knew their roles,” he added.

Ricky Ponting led Australia to two ICC ODI World Cup wins in 2003 and 2007. He also captained the team to two Champions Trophy wins in 2006 and 2009.

Dhoni meanwhile had led the Men in Blue to all the major ICC events- the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, ODI World Cup in 2011, and the Champions Trophy in 2013. Dhoni has led India in 331 matches, while Ponting has led Australia in 324 matches.
