Team Penske Racing’s three times Cup Series champion Joey Logano got a complicated relationship with the NASCAR fandom. He is one of the handful of drivers in the garage that has the most passionate fanbase as well as a group of haters as well. The veteran is often the target of these critics, at the track as well as online, and he knows how to avoid the noise.
In his latest appearance on the Donut Podcast, the No:22 Ford Mustang drover was asked about how he handled the haters. Joey Logano gave the perfect answer by asserting that he doesn’t care about them and highlighted how most of the criticism is targeted at Logano the racer not Logano the person.
His aggressive racing style and run-ins he had over the years with the fan favorites makes him a target. In the words of Logano’s biggest rivals Kyle Busch, the Ford driver is two faced. Of ten tracks he is among the most genuine personnel out there, while on the track he is ready to do everything he could, exploring the gray areas of legality to win races.
I don’t let it bother me. Yeah, and I have such a different personality on track than I do off track. So I kind of understand why I’m probably not the most liked guy. I can tell when I get introduced to fans, but I also have a lot of people that cheer for me. I understand that they’re booing the person that’s driving the car, not the person that’s out of the car. It’s almost like a character. And I’m okay with that.

Every race week Joey Logano has one goal and one goal only, win races and Roger Penske is paying him millions just for that. His job on the race track is to get the best out of the car, not to entertain or win over the fans. Racing is not a popularity contest and Logano understands it perfectly. This attitude played a significant role in him winning three championships in the top tier.
That’s fine. And to be honest with you, if you don’t like what I do on the racetrack, I don’t care. Really, I don’t care. My job is on the racetrack, not to make people like me. My job is to win. That’s what I get paid to do. So if you don’t like that, I don’t care. It’s not a popularity contest.

Joey Logano revealed the people whose criticism matters to him
In the same conversation, Joey Logano admitted that he does like the support and cheers from the fans, but isn’t running behind it. He also asserted that the hate that is coming at him is targeting Joey Logano the racers and he is okay with it.

Now, it’s important to have fans and support, and I like that part too. But to the haters—the people that don’t like you because of what you do on the racetrack—that’s not who I am. So it doesn’t affect me.

Furthermore, the veteran pointed out that the only peoples comments he is concerned about are the ones he cares about. The future Hall of Famer does not care about the criticism from the people who don’t know him personally.
(It’s not worth your breath to explain to each and every one of them, like, “Hey, this isn’t me.”) You can’t let people affect you negatively if they don’t really know who you are. The people I actually care about are the ones whose opinions matter to me.

It’s a great attitude and athletes can have regarding hate and criticism. The new generation of racers should learn these aspects from the veteran, as with the rise of social media the toxicity among the fanbase is rising faster than ever. They have to learn to avoid the noise and Joey Logano’s approach is commendable.
