Chase Elliott’s pursuit of his second cup championship ended unexpectedly after Ross Chastain crashed the HMS driver at Phoenix. The No:9 car suffered heavy damages that reduced his lap pace. Elliott finished the day at P28. This was the regular season champion’s 5th finish outside the top 20 in the postseason.

Elliott tried to block Chastain on the inside on Lap 200 restart. The Trackhouse Racing driver contacted the left rear of the No:9 and sent him to the inside wall. The Camaro ZL1 suffered right-side damage severe enough to end his championship hopes.

Chase Elliott called the incident disappointing in his post-race interview. He said, “Just disappointed. Obviously, it ended our day and our chance at a win or a championship. Just disappointing,”. Elliott kept his composure through the race and didn’t retaliate on Chastain when he had the chance, even after being convinced by his crew chief that the crash wasn’t his fault.

Ross Chastain said Elliott’s erratic move to cover him caused the crash. He said, “William (Byron) didn’t get going quite as well as he wanted to, and I got to the left of him. And I saw an erratic move he (Elliott) made to cover it, and I was already there. Yeah, it’s not how I want to race him or those guys,”.
