The NASCAR Cup Series race last Sunday witnessed RCR history in making, with Austin Dillon winning the Cook Out 400, for the second time in a row. His dominant win was the first time since Dale Earnhardt in 1998, an RCR car led more than 100+ laps to the victory. It also helped him get over the 2024-win controversy and redeem himself.
On his appearance in the Dale Jr. Download podcast, Austin Dillon sat down with Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. and explained how the race played out. He insisted that, his impressive runs at Richmond started a long time ago, as he has found himself a unique racing line there and it was unfortunate he couldn’t win a race before the Next-Gen era.
I think it started years ago, truthfully, in the old car. I should have won a race there in the old car, and I sped on pit road, ended up coming all the way back to sixth. I feel like I have a unique line there.
Austin Dillon said via Dale Jr. Download podcast.
He found his groove, driving in the lower lanes at the 0.75 miles track, and the other drivers not being aggressive enough in the part of the track has helped him. The two times Xfinity Series champion stayed true to himself in the race, didn’t try anything extra and used the natural flow to his advantage.
I feel like the lower I can be, it just helps me from a drive standpoint. I’m glad that no one really is aggressive down there where I’m at. I just kind of stay down there and do my own thing. I don’t try and change my style. I just stick to it, and I feel like by the end of the race, it kind of comes to me as rubber lays down.

Further talking about the point, Austin Dillon shared his verdict of the track and admitted that it’s very confusing venue for him, as it was once his worst track while he was dominating the Xfinity Series. But a test run he had at the track, helped him to find the missing piece of the puzzle and made him more comfortable with the track.
It’s a very confusing track. It was my worst track when I first started racing in Xfinity Series. I was like, I don’t know what to do here. We went to a test a while back, and I kind of found a rhythm and a line that I liked, and I just started building around that. It turned into one of my better tracks, and I just feel comfortable with what I’m going to do going there.
Austin Dillon asserted.
Austin Dillon shares his 2025 playoffs plan
After the race win, the RCR veteran shared his plans for the playoffs and how he is approaching a potential of a long-run. He admitted that they can perform pretty well in the R-16, c0nisdering the three tracks in the round is pretty good for them. He just focussed on these races, wiring on the simulators to find an advantage.

That first round for us is a really good round. Like, I could circle those three tracks and finish in the top-10 of all three of those. So, I feel really great about the first round of the playoffs… And I’m not even going to look to the next round. I’m just going to look at those three and go to work on them in the simulator and try and do the same type of things that we did to prepare for Richmond.

The comments from the star driver shows he is focused on one race at a time as he should and coming into Daytona this week, isn’t looking to do too much to secure the win. It’s consistent with the star drivers’ previous comment that RCR is going to do everything to help Kyle Busch end his winless streak and secure playoff spot at the iconic venue.
