The Cup race at Richmond last week saw Austin Dillon securing the race win buy wrecking race leaders Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin on the final corner. NASCAR penalized The No:3 RCR Chevy driver by stripping him of his playoff berth on Wednesday, alongside small point penalties while letting him keep the victory.
23XI Racing driver Bubba Wallace shared his verdict on the punishment at Michigan. In 2022, he was suspended for one race after he right hooked Kyle Larson. Chase Elliott got the same punishment in 2023 for doing the same to Denny Hamlin. The No:11 Toyota driver was yet again at the receiving end, as Dillon wrecked Hamlin with a right hook.
Hence Wallace feels the incident was in some sense similar to what happened to him and Elliott. So, he feels the verdict was the right as it does have the same or more severity as a one race suspension they got. Wallace was seem happy that the NASCAR made a statement with the penalty as he was very critical of the RCR driver since the incident.
Myself and Chase [Elliott] were middle of the race, so this one was different in the same category as retaliation. So, I think not being a playoff eligible win when we go through the points and the money stuff, it somewhat nets out the same — kind of.Bubba Wallace said via FOX Sports.
Austin Dillon explains how RCR can overturn the decision
Richard Childress Racing has already appealed the decision from NASCAR is looking forward to overturning the verdict. He pointed out that RCR would do a good job in covering their bases in front of the appeal court to get out of the penalty.
I am. I feel pretty good about it. You know I think Denny Hamlin has a podcast about the appeal process. He lays it out pretty well in how the appeal usually works, and I think that is why he was very forthcoming early in the week on his opinion of everything because the appeals process isn’t easy. But we will do a good job on our side to try and cover all of our bases and see what the outcome really is.Austin Dillon said.
RCR has to pull a lot of strings and makes some strong arguments to convince the appeal body to change the verdict from NASCAR. The final ruling would have to come before the end of regular season and it would be interesting to see what would be the result.
