The second-place finishing nightmare is continuing in 2026 Cup season for Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin. On Sunday at Iowa, he finished P2 behind teammates Ty Gibbs marking his seventh time he was behind the race winner when the checkered flag was waved. The result marked the 30th straight winless race in the top-tier for the JGR veteran.
Gibbs taking a risk for two tires instead for like Bell on the final stop in order to steal the lead and then producing a defensive masterclass was the key to the No:54 Camry drivers’ success. Talking about it to the media, the veteran admitted that it was one of the bad second-place finishes and admitted that his teammate beat him by not making a single mistake on the final run.
This is what you call a bad second-place finish for sure. I don’t know. I don’t know what else to say. Ty did a really good job. He did a great job managing the race; I could tell he was slipping and sliding around, and similar to two weeks ago with Corey Heim, he just didn’t make a mistake. So, P2.
Christopher Bell said after the race.
The veteran admitted that every time he got in the back of Ty Gibbs, the tires would get hot and he start slipping and sliding. Christopher Bell was never able to find the balance to makes an overtaking move on his teammate. It was the same for him while battling 23XI Racing Corey Heim for win during the Brickyard 400.
It was more of the same every time I would get to him. I actually found a little free speed by downshifting, and it seemed like that really, really increased my pace. But the tires would just get so hot, I would start slipping and sliding, and anytime I got near him, and I was trying to advance my position and get beside him, I would just slide. I got there a couple of times but never got by him.

Christopher Bell remains excited despite the disappointment
Later in the same conversation the racer highlighted how many point he has missed out on after not getting a win despite having seven solid opportunities. He had the opportunity to secure 15 bonus points and failed to that. This might come to bite him in the championship chase.

We’ve been stacking these second-place point days up. Ultimately, there are so many more points if you win. I say stacking these second-place point days up, think about the 15 bonus points that I could have had if those seconds were first. The points would look a lot different.
Christopher Bell said.
One positive from the P2 finish is the fact that he knowns his team and car have what it takes to win the race. They need to find that one key moment to get back to winning ways and when he does that, more wins would come easily, considering the Toyota’s are the cars to beat in the 2026 season.
The one thing I’m excited about is we’re still alive. After how rough this season has been for us, we’re still alive in the title fight, and today helped our case for that.
Christopher Bell added.
The comments from the star driver are on point and shows how he is doing everything he could to get back to winning ways. It would be interesting to see how everything is going to payout for the star driver in the upcoming weeks, with just three more races left in the regular season.
