One of the biggest controversies from last weekend was the brake pad drama involving Denny Hamlin at Iowa. He was denied the opportunity to change defect pad and the sanctioning body even threatened the driver with harsh penalties during a heated hauler meeting. Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. wasn’t happy with NASCAR’s stance on the situation.

On the latest episode of the Dale Jr. Download podcast, the JR Motorsports co-owner highlighted that teams should be allowed to change parts with issues. The teams allowed to make those changes in the past, but now in the single sourced parts era, these changes are not allowed.

I think you should just be able to change them. It’s just hard for me to stomach that we are where we are in such a short period of time. And the way we look, the way we do things today, we would go to the racetrack, and if we wanted to change the ***** pads or change the rotors or put new **** in, we just did it.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. said on his podcast.

The Hall of Fame hate how rigid the sanctioning body has become owing certain rules and his comments were passionate. The rule books don’t mention any penalties if the teams change the parts against NASCAR directive and they should make some amendments to add those, giving teams the opportunity make a decision.

And in such a short period of time, we have gotten to a place where nobody wants to ***** do ****. Nobody wants nobody to be able to do ****. Why are we so rigid?

Dale Earnhardt Jr. added via Dale Jr. Download.

The two times second division champion believes NASCAR should use common sense to make changes, and these should some reasonable understanding over incidents like Denny Hamlin drama. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is okay with NASCAR giving the team that make changes severe penalties, but they need to give teams the chance fix issues with defect parts.

Should NASCAR let teams change brake pads? I believe they should. I believe there should be some reasonable understanding, common sense. If you need to send them to the back, if it’s a change before the race and everybody agrees, hey, okay, you can do it, but you got to go to the back, fine.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. asserted.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. suggests a reasonable rule change

Further talking about the point Junior highlighted that NASCAR should allow the teams to change part if they wish to after the practice session without any penalties. If they wanted to change parts after the qualifying, the sanctioning body can hit them with big fines. That’s a reasonable resolution to the issue.

I think if it happens before qualifying, maybe you leave it alone. I think if you change anything on your car, I guess after qualifying, if we’re doing it that way, you know, you may go to the rear. But since we’re going to add a little practice, I think you got to open it up a little bit.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. said.

Since NASCAR rule book has become so rigid, the whole dynamic of the traveling mechanics has changed. Often, they only have to push the cars around the garage for tech reviews. There needs to a be change that allows teams to work on their cars a bit and make them more raceable on Sunday, which would only benefit the sport in the long run.
