Joey Logano and Ross Chastain has been among the few standout drivers in the Next-Gen era. The latter won two of the three championships in the new era, while the latter established himself as a future champion with string runs as Trackhouse driver. According to Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. the duo has special advantage over other in the garage.
One of the key factors that helps Joey Logano and Ross Chastain standout is their balanced aggression, which is important for any driver to thrive with current car offering very limited chances of passing. Dale Earnhardt Jr. highlights how these drivers have openly admitted their selfish intentions while racing and how being “d***heads” is helping them to win. These racers using their superior mirror driving skills are very aggressive defenders on the track.
The reason why Joey’s good at it, the reason why Chastain’s good at it, is because they’re willing to be the biggest d***heads out there. It’s not engrained in all of us to be selfish, and be purely selfish, but you have to be.

Team Penske Racing’s Ryan Blaney, Joe Gibbs Racing Denny Hamlin and winningest driver of the era Kyle Larson are also drivers with same quality. But they are more controlled and balanced regarding how they race their rival aggressively. But they are closer to the likes of Christpher Bell and William Byron, two drivers who are known for more respectful racing and more successful in terms of wins, than the duo Dale Jr. mentioned.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. reveals how he acted in his racing career
Talking about the duo’s attitude, Junior explains what was his attitude as a racer. Despite being a comparatively aggressive driver, a must considering he is the intimidator’s son, the two times Xfinity Series champion always focussed on not making enemies. He is always looking to make friends with everyone.

I always tried — speaking frankly here, I want to be everybody’s buddy. Everywhere I go around the race track on the weekend, I want to be friends with Chase [Briscoe], I want to be friends with everybody. When I raced, I wanted to get out of the car and go, ‘Hey man, that shit was fun. You good? Hope you liked racing me.’
Dale Earnhardt Jr. said.
But he isn’t always the good boy when the races are at Superspeedways like Daytona and Talladega, in these tracks one has to be a**hole to be successful in these events. Hence unlike in other track, Junior goes to the superspeedways determined to be tough with rivals.
Now, we go to Daytona and Talladega, and I would have to tell myself before I got in the car, ‘You’re going to have to be an asshole today…I didn’t do things intentionally like, ‘Screw you guys,’ and run people into the wall, ‘I don’t care about your race,’ but I knew, to be good at Daytona and Talladega, I kind of had to be a bit of a jerk…
Dale Earnhardt Jr. asserted.
The veteran asserted that now days the Next-Gen cars has forced a situation where the drivers have no option but to be jerks in every tracks. The comments from the Hall of Famer perfectly explains why the drivers, especially the historically aggressive and young drivers are taking more risks nowadays.
