Trackhouse Racing’s Shane van Gisbergen created history this Sunday at Charlotte Roval, winning his fifth win of the season, all coming in the road courses. With a 15+ second lead over Kyle Larson who finished P2, he becomes first driver since Bobby Allison in 1982 to win multiple races with such a huge margin. He is now without a doubt the GOAT road course racer in NASCAR history.
Senior NASCAR journalist Jordan Bianchi though wasn’t ready to give him that tag and that irked Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin. On the latest episode of Actions Detrimental podcast, he declared that the Shane van Gisbergen vs Jeff Gordon debate is worthless, and even in his prime the current HMS Vice Chairman can’t beat the Kiwi.
Jordan Bianchi is absolutely out of his mind. Yeah, he’s on the short-list for the best NASCAR road racer ever. What is he talking about? Does he really think that Jeff Gordon, in his prime, would beat SVG today in a NextGen car? Not a chance. Not a remote chance.
Denny Hamlin responded on Actions Detrimental podcast.
He asserted that within one and half year, SVG has become the greatest road course racer in the sport’s history. The veteran earlier in the conversation backed his argument by highlighting how Gordon won races due to having a better car than rest of the field. Even then he could produce huge margins as the three times Supercars champion, making him the undisputed GOAT.
But when it comes to turning left and right, they are not close, and SVG is the greatest road course NASCAR driver in history, and he’s only been doing it for a year and a half. It’s undisputed. Anybody that disputes it, even in my mentions, shut up! I know, you don’t, I compete, you don’t.
Denny Hamlin added.
In the podcast he also made another argument in favor of the No:88 Chevy driver. SVG’s teammates Ross Chastain and Daniel Suarez, both of whom has proven NASCAR road course racing pedigree, can’t match the Cup rookie on the same car. They are racing just like the rest of the field, showing the massive advantage superior race craft is giving the star driver.
Justin Marks explains who deserves the credit for Shane van Gisbergen’s win
On his post-race interview, talking about the win, Trackhouse Racing’s majority owner Justin Marks shared his thoughts how they are continuing to dominate road course races with SVG. This dominance came at the same time, they are struggling to compete in the oval races, with Chastain and Saurez.

It’s kind of interesting to look at our year because in many ways, there’s a lot of things we felt like we really need to do a lot better with this race team. I was just talking about getting more week-in, week-out speed, unloading with more speed every seven days. That’s been a theme inside the building is that we just have to get better.
Justin Marks said.
They have do execute better to get to the same level of performance as the road course side of their company. He pointed out that almost all of the credit for the success goes to the No:88 driver as well as his crew, who is delivering every week.
We have to understand these cars better. We have to unload better on Saturdays and qualify better…The fact this is the winningest season in the history of the company has a lot to do with this incredible 88 team. Shane is a world-class racer. But it’s not just Shane. It takes everybody.
Justin Marks added.
The comments from the Trackhouse owner shows having experienced Kiwi in the team has helped the evolve their road course game better than any other team in the Next-Gen era. At the moment, there are no signs that shows the dominance is coming to an end anytime soon.
