Richmond has been a staple of entertainment in NASCAR for years. The Cook 400 last weekend was a testament to the statement, as a final lap clash saw Austin Dillon take his maiden win of the season. On the other hand, this left Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano furious, as they were the ones who suffered majorly from the crash. Subsequently, the JGR driver revealed the details of the chat that he had with the Ford driver later on.

Austin Dillon won his first race in 2017 in a classic drive. The 34-year-old came from the back in the initial three stages and won the final stage when it mattered the most. Similarly, at Richmond, he started away from the top five but had the ambition to win the race. The RCR driver made his way through the pack and was in the lead for the last stage before losing his advantage heading into the final lap.

However, seeing the win slipping away from him, the No.3 driver divebombed Joey Logano and subsequently took out Denny Hamlin, which reminded former drivers about Dale Earnhardt Sr. On the contrary, Logano and Hamlin were the ones left in a worse-off situation who later had a chat regarding the issue.

He called me when I was on the plane. Nice of Joey[Logano]. He was like ‘How’s your shoulder? Are you alright?’ I’m like ‘Yeah, it sucked. You obviously got the worst end of it. I at least was able to finish.’ He’s like ‘What did NASCAR say? I went to the hauler and nobody was there.’ We just had those conversations.

The Toyota driver revealed that his fellow rival called him, which he deemed to be a nice gesture. The two drivers talked about the incident and shared their perspectives regarding the clash.

Denny Hamlin reveals the dilemma that NASCAR might need to face

While Dillon made his debut in 2011 and is relatively newer to the field, his actions at Richmond were lamented to become a wrong example for the coming generation of drivers. Despite this, the Chevy driver reckoned he had to give his all to win the race which might have stepped some boundaries, but was worth it.

However, if NASCAR does not penalize the No.3 driver, Hamlin earlier asserted that the regulatory body would be neglecting its responsibilities. On the other hand, if such acts remain unpunished, Hamlin revealed how he could take out his competitors in the final four, guaranteeing him the championship as he would face no repercussions.

If we allow this, this is a bad, bad way to go because at Phoenix, just wipe all your competitors out. Like, if I were in the final 4, what keeps me from just crashing all three of the guys that I'm up against?

Despite Hamlin and Logano urging for a change, NASCAR does not seem to be interested in changing the result order. Thus, Dillon is almost assured a spot in the playoffs and would be a contender in the round of 16.
