The annual NASCAR All-Star Race will be held on May 21st at the North Wilkesboro Speedway in North Carolina. Now what has intrigued the fans is the trophy. The winner will be presented with a replica of a moonshine still (distillation device for alcohol). Though the Cup Series today is considered professional, its history dates back to the Prohibition era.

The United States banned the sale and import of alcoholic beverages from 1920 to 1933. It was a time when drivers craved liquor despite its ban; they soon modified their cars to escape from the police. They then began taking their vehicles to tracks for serious competition. This year, the iconic track North Wilkesboro Speedway will welcome back the annual All-Star Race with a trophy based on its roots.

According to North Wilkesboro, the “moonshine still” trophy was designed by Call Family Distillers. They have partnered with the Chequered Past Speakeasy and will award a lump cash prize to the All-Star Race winner. As per the reports, the event logos and the phrase “born to shine” will be embedded in the trophy, and it will be so big that two people will be required to lift it.

The NASCAR fans had the best reaction once they saw the images of the trophy. Some praised the sport for its unique trophies, but others called it weird. “Someone should reengineer this so it’s a working still,” and “The important question for the winner… does it work?” were two comments. Most fans want to know whether the trophy is functional.

NASCAR Twitter had a mixed reaction. Some fans found the trophy “badass,” and others called it “interesting.” “ This is cool. Moonshine is the heritage of the sport” and “That is so sad. That looks like a yard sale find” were two varied opinions.  There was another user who rated it one of the top 5 trophies. Take a look at other reactions below.

The executive director of the NASCAR All-Star Race, Jessica Fickenscher, spoke about the significance of the trophy. She stated that it would provide a tribute to NASCAR’s early days. Fickenscher revealed that most drivers began their careers bootlegging in fast cars through Wilkes County. She also thanked the Call Family Distillers for providing the moonshine still trophies.
