William Byron became the first driver since Denny Hamlin to secure back-to-back Daytona 500 wins on Sunday, as he survived the chaos to secure his spot in the playoffs for the 2025 season. There were some serious challenges and wrecks involving the lead driver he had to overcome to get into the victory lane, including the last alp wreck.
Luck also played a significant role on his win, as poor decision making from the defending champion Joey Logano, who had the fastest car of the day helped him a bit. The No:22 Ford racer caused a wreck that collected many, including Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott and Kyle Busch. Hence the Hendrick Motorsports garage didn’t hessite a bit to call out Logano.
William Byron and HMS Vice Chairman Jeff Gordon were giving their post-race interviews, when they were asked about who they think made dumb moves in the race, the quickly named Joey Logano who was the instigator of the chaos. Gordon was the one to name the Penske racer and Byron quickly seconded his claim.
William Byron was just asked if drivers were making ‘dumb moves’ and unprompted, Jeff Gordon chimed in: “Joey did.”…William: “I’ll second that.”

William Byron is proud of the massive win
In his post-race interview Byron also talked about his emotions after winning the race and credited his good fortunes over the win. Him trusting his instincts at the end and the strong car the No:24 team field for him also helped him to succeed.

Yeah, obviously some good fortune, but I just trusted my instincts on the last lap there. I felt like they were getting squirrelly on the bottom. Just obviously fortunate that it worked out in our favor. But just really proud of this team. Worked super hard all week and had an amazing car.
William Byron said.
The No:24 team now has to work on using the momentum to secure more wins and place them in a good spot going into the playoffs. They also have to keep their head down to restrain from peaking too early in the season and miss out on the championship yet again.
