Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney suffered from a disappointing end to their races at the YellaWood 500 at Talladega despite looking strong from the get-go. Both Penske drivers had a great shot at finishing within the top five and strengthening their playoff positions, but because of the team’s chaotic fuel strategy, they couldn’t do so. Now, ex-NASCAR star Kevin Harvick opens up on why people were glad that Logano and Blaney tasted defeat in Talladega.
At the YellaWood 500, Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney could only finish in P16 and P23, respectively, which came after a botched fuel-stop call by the team. Logano even criticized the team’s strategy that caused him to lose his run. The #22 driver even led the most laps in the race, but was unable to achieve a top-five finish, courtesy of Team Penske’s pit call. The Penske duo is still vying for a race win and moving to the Championship-4, more so after the struggles at Dega.
Kevin Harvick pondered over the reasons why Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney weren’t people’s favorite to win races and move to the Championship-4. Harvick insisted that everybody knew that if the Penske duo was put in the position to win a race, they would most likely emerge victorious. The 49-year-old reckoned that the rivals wanted to keep Blaney and Logano in the middle of the pack and make their winning chances all the more difficult.
I think that everybody knows if they put them in a position to win, they’re going to win. And if they can keep them shuffled and keep them in the middle of the field, that’s going to make the odds of them having that track position and being able to have that work out for him.
Kevin Harvick said on the Happy Hour podcast.
Kevin Harvick pointed out that the rivals could easily understand which drivers had the most dominant car, and hence made their life a little more difficult on the track. Moreover, Harvick made a brutal claim that neither Joey Logano nor Ryan Blaney was as beloved as the father-son duo of Dale Earnhardt that everyone wanted to see win. As such, this was the reason behind the fans and others not being so eager to witness the Penske duo win races and ultimately the championship on track.
Guys know when you have the dominant car. And let’s face it, they’re not Dale Earnhardt Jr. or Dale Earnhardt Sr. People don’t want to see them win. And don’t want to be a part of their win.

Kevin Harvick asserts Team Penske at the point of ‘being dominant’ currently
Joey Logano hasn’t achieved a monumental season in 2025 despite being the defending Cup Series champion this season. However, his shock entry into the playoffs definitely shook things up a lot for the rivals. Even Ryan Blaney has remained a dominant force in the playoffs despite his problematic state in the regular season at multiple races.

Now, Kevin Harvick insisted that Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney, alongside Team Penske, were getting to a point of certain dominance. This meant that the rivals did not want to see them win or make their life any easier while racing. As such, the competitors wanted to put Logano and Blaney in a bad spot and put them in the middle of the pack, which would weaken their winning chances.
When you get to a point of being dominant, the competitors want to put you in a bad spot. They got shuffled and put themselves in the middle of the pack and that was it.
Kevin Harvick noted.
There are still two upcoming races ahead of the championship finale at Phoenix. Denny Hamlin and Chase Briscoe have clinched their spots in the top four. For now, Kyle Larson and Christopher Bell are the favorites to make it into the final two spots. However, if there is anyone who can turn around their results and make a shock entry in the championship fight, it is indeed Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney.
