Joey Logano and grinding in the playoffs is almost synonymous in the Next-Gen era. He has yet again proved his prowess in the final race of 2025 playoffs R-12 at Roval, by getting promoted into the R-8 with last lap pass on Ross Chastain taking advantage of a risky strategy and some luck. The reigning champion is now more dangerous that he has ever been, according to Kevin Harvick.
In the latest episode of the Happy Hour podcast, 2014 Cup Series champion Kevin Harvick explained how big of a threat Joey Logano is for the rest of the playoff grid. The veteran racer, who has three championships to his name, has a solid car and a great crew under Paul Wolfie who is capable of influencing decisions of the whole garage, has proved he is yet again a title favorite.
I still believe that the (threat) with the No. 22 car — with Joey Logano — is exactly what happened this week. You’ve got Paul Wolfe sitting up on the pit box, and he made an absolutely gutsy call to bring that car to pit road. The whole strategy was their’s, right? You saw the No. 20 come to pit road before the No. 22 car, put tires on it, and it forced everybody else to follow.
Kevin Harvick said via Happy Hour podcast.
The No:22 team over the years have perfected the game of grinding through the playoffs, peaking at the right moments to remain in the championship contention. They have a driver that is capable of executing their plans. Even though they don’t have the outright pace to dominate R-8, their history at Vegas, Martinsville and Talladega makes them contenders.
The 22 team is the same way — they grind it out on restarts, they make the right calls at the right time. You look back at Kansas — that two-tire call put them in position, and that’s just what Paul Wolfe does. And Joey Logano executes it well to maximize what they do…I don’t believe they have the speed they need — Vegas, Martinsville, Talladega, those are good tracks for them…
Kevin Harvick added.
Further talking about the point, he asserted that unlike his teammate Ryan Blaney who thrives with dominate pace, Joey Logano thrives by executing to perfection, especially in the restarts. This ability the driver, the solid speed Team Penske Ford Mustang has, and the crew chief makes the dangerous in the championship battle.
But I don’t think they have the outright pace of the No. 12. What they do have is the ability to put themselves in front of faster cars by executing on restarts. They’re dangerous from that standpoint. Like I said, I don’t think they have the speed, but they have the ability to make the right calls and make things happen better than just about anyone else.
Kevin Harvick asserted.
Kevin Harvick credits crew chief Paul Wolfe for Joey Logano’s success
In the same conversation, the former Stewart Haas Racing driver shared his thought on the brain behind Logano’s success, his crew chief Paul Wolfe. The veteran asserted that the crew chief has the guts, knowledge and brains to deliver under pressure. According to Harvick, the No:22 team operates just like the No:11 team of Denny Hamlin, who is the front runner for the 2025 title.

But Paul Wolfe — guts. He has the guts, the knowledge, the brains to just do something that — Big Ball Paul. He made the call, and it put them in position for everything that happened after. It also put the No. 1 in a bad spot because they didn’t match the pit call… The No. 22 team is that they just race better than most everybody else. When they execute, they’re a lot like the No. 11.
Kevin Harvick said.
The comments from the ex-Richard Childress Racing driver seems rational. Team Penske Racing right now has everything from brain, ability and expertise to thrive yet again this season. It would be interesting to see if Logano and Blaney can continue the Ford team’s championship dominance in the current era.
