The 2024 NASCAR Cup season has seen one of the most dramatic championship wins, with Joey Logano racking in his third title upsetting defending Cup winner Ryan Blaney. There is a huge group in the racing community who are making comments aimed at discrediting the No:22 teams win, criticizing the playoff format.

The Chase format being something that rewards one of wins than consistency has been a huge point of discussion and amidst the criticism ex-champion Kevin Harvick has proposed a way to fix it. He doesn’t see replacing the system as the right choice, instead he wants to make changes to it, with the goal of rewarding drivers that does well in the regular season.

I think the big question is, what is the weight of the regular season, and where does that regular season champion fall? We talked about putting them in the Championship 4. We started a conversation last week that was fun and intriguing to me, and I think that, when you come back and look at those things, maybe that champion goes into the final eight, maybe not the final four, and having to earn your way to the end.

Kevin Harvick pondered, via Happy Hour podcast.

He pointed out that giving more points or a fixed seat in the Round of 8, for the regular season performance will make it more meaningful. It’s a suggestion that NASCAR can discuss up on and potentially employ in the future.

I think it’s definitely not — if we could make the regular season more meaningful, that’s really the accomplishment that I’d like to see made over the first 26 weeks, to have that weighted to what it is, because it’s not like other sports.

Kevin Harvick compares NASCAR playoff format with other sports

While further talking on the playoff criticism, Harvick compared the playoff format to other sports. He pointed out the NASCAR system is more similar to football, while other sports give teams more opportunities to make mistakes and rectify them. So, he wants NASCAR find that solution which will give more weight to regular season.

You can’t compare this to football and baseball and basketball, and this team got eliminated and that team got eliminated… It’s not a single race. It’s not a single game, outside of football. I mean, football is more along the lines of what we do…You have to have some sort of playoff format. But I think the biggest thing is figuring out how to weight that regular season to make it matter as much as possible.

Kevin Harvick said.

The proposal from Kevin Harvick is something NASCAR has taken into account and implement. It has the potential to make it better and more entertaining. It will be interesting to if NASCAR will look into the proposal and make it happen.
