The NASCAR Cup garage is at Sonoma Raceway for the 16th race of the 2024 NASCAR Cup season. It’s the second last road course race in the regular season, hence the drivers that are RC race specialists have limited races left to win and secure playoff spot. With the change to the track made in turn 11 and new pavement some drivers will find it hard to navigate the track.
2014 NASCAR Cup champion Kevin Harvick, who is currently retired and is part of Fox Sports broadcasting team, has been predicting the winners of each week for the last 14 weeks and he has a good success rate. But coming into this weekend the future Hall of Famer refused to make a prediction.
He highlighted that with the it’s tough to make a prediction as the new pavement and turn 11 changes will be huge factors. Harvick expects strategy not tier falloff be the difference maker on Sunday. Hence asserted he isn’t picking any one to win.
This is a tough one. I think that, we’ve got new pavement. I think it’s going to come down too, not a lot of tire fall-off. I think it’s going to come down to strategy. I’m not even going to pick anybody this week. I’m not picking.Kevin Harvick said via Happy Hour podcast.
Kevin Harvick reckons drivers have taken risk at pit-road to succeed at Sonoma
He later also pointed out that Martin Truex Jr., Josh Berry, Shane Van Gisbergen and Ross Chastain who has done tests this year at the track might have some advantage. But he doesn’t expect this advantage to last much as the 50 minuets practice and taking risks at pit-stops would be the game changer.
So, I think those guys have an advantage, to get started right off the bat. But we have a 50-minute practice. This is going to come down to taking some risk on pit road.Kevin Harvick said.
It would be interesting to see how the drivers would tackle the challenges that are ahead of them at Toyota/Save Mart 350. The previous experience at the track being less of factor would give everyone with a fast car a great shot at winning the race on Sunday.
