Hendrick Motorsports’ Kyle Larson is one of the most talented racers the sports have ever seen, with two Cup championships and 32 wins to his name. His sprint car racing outside NASCAR has been nothing but legendary with triumphs in Knoxville Nationals and Kings Royal, alongside being the co-founder/champion of his own series, High Limit Racing.
The big plan the No:5 HMS driver has with his career back in 2018 was to race in Cup till he is 40 and then race full-time in the Sprint Car series. But now the plan has changed, considering he has accomplished more over the last eight years and needs to shift his focus to being with his family, as well as kids who are growing up.
I started saying this last year, but 40 is my next milestone. I want to get there and then evaluate if I want to keep going or be done. It all depends on where my kids are in their lives and interests.
Kyle Larson said recently.
In the same conversation later, the Hendrick Motorsports star driver admitted that he has changed his mind on the goal he has previously set for his post-NASCAR career. The major reason behind Kyle Larson changed his mind was the amount of success he has had in the dirt racing scene since 2020, and after joining HMS where was allowed to race in mid-week as much as he wanted.
As far as competing for a Sprint Car championship, I would say right now in 2026, that I have changed my mind on that. I feel like I have accomplished a lot since I made those comments. I’ve been able to win three Knoxville Nationals, three Chili Bowls and a Kings Royal. All the other races.

Further talking about the point, the No:5 Chevy driver pointed out that at the moment he is clueless on which sprint car racing championship he should pursue now and admitted that with his kids racing, he should not be having 80-to-90 race schedule anymore. He has scraped all his previous plans, but admits that he might reconsider again by the time he becomes 40.
I just don’t know what a championship would add to my career so I’m just not into the idea now. And like I said, I think my kids are going to be busy doing their own racing by that time, so do I really want to commit to an 80-to-90 race schedule? I just feel like I have a really good balance in my schedule this year and I’m enjoying that. But you never know, and six or seven years down the road, things might change.
Kyle Larson asserted.
Kyle Larson wants NASCAR to shorten Cup races
In a separate conversation, the Hendrick Motorsports veteran talked about the comment from IndyCar legend Scott Dixon who claimed the Cup races are too long. Larson believes it is a right assertion, as three-hour event is too much for the sport consumers. He seems to believes there needs to be a change.

Well, I’ll start off by saying yes, I agree that a lot of our Cup races are too long. I just think that’s the way the world has kind of gone and how people consume sports. I definitely think our races are too long. I think three hours is too long. So yeah. But as far as a nap, I don’t know… So, it doesn’t really bother me, but I agree with what he was saying.
Kyle Larson said.
The comments from the defending Cup Series champion are on point and shows how the sport needs some significant changes to market itself to the young demographic. It would be interesting to see how NASCAR is going to respond to these comments.
