Hendrick Motorsports’ Kyle Larson celebrated the waiver he got for missing the Coca Cola 600 by winning the Toyota Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway. He had an impressive race that saw him fend off challenges from Martin Truex Jr. on the way to securing his third win of the 2024 season as well as the P1 spot in the championship table.
While he came into Sonoma without any major concerns, he did have some concerns over Kyle Busch, with who he had a clash at Gateway the previous week. The No:5 Chevy driver hit the RCR veteran in the back and the incident resulted in a spin that forced the two times Cup champion to DNF from the race.
Kyle Larson pointed out that though Kyle Busch could have been a bit racey with him he decided not to and was very respectful racing him as he has always been. He also highlighted that along with being respectful, the Richard Childress Racing veteran is also very smart when it comes how he manages racing.
He always races with a lot of respect. I was surprised that he kind of just let me go and didn’t get racey with me but he’s very respectful out there and he’s very smart about the way he manages his race.Kyle Larson said at Sonoma.
Kyle Larson insists he never cared about the waiver drama
Since Kyle Larson missed out on the Coke 600, there has a lot of drama over if he would get the waiver. While most in the NASCAR community were concerned about how the drama would playout, Larson wasn’t as he was just focussed on racing.
Literally, my mind never wavered. It was always focused on executing and winning the regular season points, whether that be on the owner’s side or whatever. My mindset has not changed at all. I race to win every single race. I haven’t really thought any differently since missing Charlotte.Kyle Larson said.
The 2021 Cup champion is now focussed on winning the regular season championship. He was able to close the gap on Denny Hamlin and take the lead after the JGR driver’s engie busted on lap two at Sonoma and the fight for the extra playoff points is on.
