Zane Smith has survived the triple Toyota threat to secure his maiden truck series championship in the third time of asking. The young Ford driver made it to the finale last two times but failed to achieve the final glory as he finished second in those races, but he has done it now.
He held off rivals Chandler Smith and Ben Rhodes in the two-lap overtime sprint to secure the title. Smith who started the race on pole had a smooth sailing in the start as he won the first two stages. But a poor pit stop and a series of re-starts placed him outside the top 10.
He raced his way to the top and was able to position himself behind leader Ben Rhodes in the final restart following fellow Championship chaser Ty Majeski’s spin. Zane was able to make the race three wide soon after the restart. He went on to take the lead and hold it until the finish line.
“Third time’s a charm. I was crying that whole lost lap. For so long I’ve wanted this moment, all my life. That’s all I’ve got…I wasn’t going to let it go down like that…I was wrecking or winning this thing, there was no other option,” Zane Smith said after the win.
