The Darlington throwback weekend was a disappointing day for 23XI Racing’s Bubba Wallace though he ended the day at P5. Finishing the day as the top Toyota wasn’t enough for the No:23 Camry driver, as he missed out on the opportunity to secure potentially fight for the win against William Byron and Kevin Harvick if not for a controversial call from NASCAR.

For the penultimate restart of the race, NASCAR allowed the cars of Chase Elliott, Brad Keselowski, and Harvick to start ahead of Wallace and his fellow rivals though they were involved in the “big one”. The sanctioning body deemed that Wallace speeded during the wreck to gain position after the caution was called while the rest of the three drivers kept the caution pace while being in the wreck.

The two times Cup race winner was disappointed and had some words to share on the team radio. He apologized to team co-owner NBA legend Michael Jordan and CEO Steve Lauletta. Wallace was frustrated and apologized because he planned to criticize NASCAR for the decision after the race and was expecting a fine.

Dude. Sorry Steve, MJ. I might get fined after this f****** race,” Wallace replied to his spotter after learning his position for the restart. He explained the situation to the team later, saying,  “All three cars you just talked about were involved in the wreck, but they’re in front of us. This is f****** mind-boggling,”.

Wallace said he felt bad for Toyota for the result and pointed out that it wasn’t meant to be if NASCAR hadn’t allowed them to keep the positions. He said he is happy with the day despite some pit road struggles and promised a bounce back next week.

Yeah, sorry Toyota, Dr. Pepper, but it’s absolute bulls*** how — what the 6, the 9, they all finished ahead of us and were in a wreck. Just doesn’t make any sense to me. All in all, happy with our day. We struggled on the pit road. These guys are strong, so we’ll bounce back next week. Just wasn’t meant to be,”

He added that he would have a shot at winning if not for the BS decision. He said, “I feel like if we were thinking with our dipstick, we would have really had a good shot at winning this thing, which would have been nice. All in all, a solid points day… Frustrating day. Had to dig in to persevere. Thanks to everybody involved. Just got beat by some bulls***.”
