23XI Racing driver Bubba Wallace had a solid day at Darlington, though he finished the race below his starting position. He started the race at P2 behind pole-sitter Martin Truex Jr. and finished at p5. Wallace was the best-finished Toyota of the day and was the only TRD driver to score a top-10 finish on throwback Cup weekend.

But Wallace would have scored a better finish than his P5 and would have been the winner if not for the controversial restart decision from NASCAR. With just a few laps left in the race, Wallace was racing with an aim for a top-10 finish. But then, on the third last restart, Joey Logano and Martin Truex Jr. collided and prompted a muti-car crash.

Wallace was able to avoid the crash and get into the top 5. But for the restart, NASCAR decided to allow four drivers, including Chase Elliott, Brad Keselowski, and Chase Elliot, to keep their position despite being involved in the wreck. So the TRD driver could only land a P5 behind the three former champions who were allowed to keep the places and winner William Byron.

Though it was a good result, Wallace wasn’t pleased with the missed opportunity he took to Twitter to share his views. He tweeted, “Hard to accept a solid top 5 when the inconsistency is so consistent; mind boggled how we finished behind cars caught up in a wreck. What could’ve been,”. He shared a video of Kevin Harvick getting caught up in the wreck along with it.

He later came across a tweet from RACER.com’s Kelly Crandall’s tweet about NASCAR claiming that the No:23 car of Wallace speeded to gain position while the driver involved in the wreck-maintained caution speed. He replied, “Bahahahaaha. We gained positions BECAUSE WE MISSED the wreck..  lmao, this is comical,”.

The No:23 Toyota Camry received mixed reactions from NASCAR fans online. Some quickly mock him for indirectly claiming he was denied a good finish. Him being one of the most dividing figures of the sport due to many reasons was a factor behind it. There were also fans that backed Wallces’s claim that it was the right call.
