The upcoming 2024 NASCAR Cup season will be a major challenge for Stewart Haas Racing. Tony Stewart and co-owner Gene Haas have made some major decisions to get the team back to winning ways after going winless in the 2023 season. The team was beyond disappointed over the failure to give their legendary driver, Kevin Harvick, a car capable of winning races in his retirement year.
The team is determined to get back on top under the leadership of new No:1 driver Chase Briscoe, who is now the most senior driver on the team despite racing just three seasons in the NASCAR Cup series. His teammates Ryan Preece and newly hired Josh Berry have less top-tier experience. On the other hand, SHR’s fourth driver, Noah Gragson, is coming from a disappointing rookie season.
But this has put much pressure on Briscoe’s shoulders. He recently admitted that 2024 would be the year that could determine his NASCAR career, as he now has to establish himself as the guy to beat and the racer to invest in by SHR. Consistency and being in contention for race wins more often is his priority to prove himself going into the 2024 season.
I feel like this is one of those years where it’s really going to determine kind of how my future lays out. If I go out this year and have success and contending for wins and running up front, this is one of those years where for the future, like contracts, everything could totally change. Where If I have another bad year like last year, it could totally change the trajectory of my career.Briscoe told via NBC Sports.
Chase Briscoe claims he thrives under pressure
While admitting he is under pressure, Briscoe also pointed out that he can thrive under pressure. He recalled his time in the Xfinity Series, where he found himself in a similar situation and got out by winning races and championships. The No:14 Ford driver hopes to recreate those successful times again in the top tier.
I feel like, for whatever reason, I have always performed better under pressure. Even if that’s compartmentalizing something for myself, even Xfinity when I said I had to win ‘X’ amount, it’s something for me to kind of strive for that I know is capable. Just I feel like a lot of people probably don’t think is capable.
Briscoe has the perfect opportunity to show his prowess and secure a long-term deal to drive for the team in 2024. If he fails to deliver and one of his teammates outperforms him, questions will start to arise about his credentials.
