Chase Elliott believes ‘driving smart’ at Talladega can get you a ‘decent result’ as the championship leader’s search continuous for a win this season

Chase Elliott

Though he is yet to win a cup series race in the Next-Gen car Hendrick Motorsport racer Chase Elliott sits on the top of the 2022 championship table a testament to his consistent Top 10 finishes so far this season. But his inability to convert those consistent runs into wins is a big hurdle for him to overcome as the rest of the grid is catching up with him in the point table.

The 2020 champion will hit the Talladega Superspeedway this Sunday aiming to end his winless streak, something he has been trying to do since the first day of racing this season. He will be confident going into Talladega as he started his season bagging his first P10 at the other Superspeedway of the schedule the Daytona International Speedway.

Now, the No:9 Chevrolet Camaro driver has come forth suggesting that he is expecting a decent result if he is able to drive smart.

Chase Elliott acknowledged that Talladega is one of the most uncertain tracks in the schedule so it is important for a driver to be smart and willing to do anything to make it there. He went on to say that one not only depends on himself as fellow competitors but also has a say in how it can turn out and added that if he is able to avoid such things a good finish is guaranteed.

Talladega is one of those places where you just don’t know how your day is going to end up. I think that’s why driving smart and just doing what you can to make it to the checkered flag is the main focus. Your race can change so fast if you’re in the wrong lane or you get caught up in someone else’s mistake. I think if you can avoid those things and finish the race, you’re going to have a decent result,” Chase Elliott said.

The COTA race winner and one of the most impressive drivers of the 2022 season Ross Chastain acknowledged that he does not see any changes going to happen in Talladega compared to how the race played out in the past. He went on to suggest pointing out to the season opener at Daytona that the race will be harder at the end with high chances of pushing turning to the wreck which he believes not every driver has taken into account.

“Being able to watch most of the Daytona 500, unfortunately, it looks like the racing will be similar in the car as it was in the old car. Once the full field is out there, you can all intermingle. Coming down to the end at Daytona, it was really hard to get pushed, we had some wrecks from pushing gone wrong, where the old would not have wrecked, so that’s harder, but I’m sure everyone has learned from that,” Ross Chastain said.
