NASCAR hosted one of its worst-ever cup races this season at Martinsville speedway. Contrary to its past, the short-track race became a tire strategy game. The track temperature and a few factors gave drivers no average chance to pass opponents.
Hendrick Motorsports driver Chase Elliott is one of the championship favorites this season. But even for the regular season champion, the Martinsville race will be a tough challenge. Elliott imagines a similar lackluster race this Sunday.
In his latest media interaction, Elliott pointed out that the Martinsville spring race was wild as it was hard to pass during the race. He added that he also expects to see similar results this Sunday.
“The Martinsville (Speedway) race in the spring was different from any Martinsville race I’ve ever really been a part of in the past. It was the craziest thing. You couldn’t pass. It was wild to be going that slow and to have a track position race like that. I’m sure it will be more of that (this weekend), and look, that’s fine,” Chase Elliott said.
Chase Elliott’s strategy for Martinsville
Chase Elliott pointed out that as a competitor, one has to look for a win in every environment thrown at them. He said, “It is what it is, right? As competitors, you have to figure out how to be successful in whatever environment is thrown at you, and I think that’s what we’re going to have there,”.
Chase Elliott said that a good qualifying session is important at Martinsville. He said, “I think a reasonable qualifying effort is going to be really important in how your day’s going to unfold and how many opportunities you’re going to have,”.
Elliott pointed out that he has to get everything right in the qualifiers, as he won’t be getting any chance to catch up during the race. He said, “Hopefully, we can just get it right all weekend because you’ll have to be on from the beginning. There’s going to be no catching up,”.
No:9 crew chief Alan Gustafson said that their plan for Martinsville will acquire maximum points. He added that it’s “all or nothing” for all at the track. Gustafson said, “You try to score as many points as possible, and you try to win the race, but obviously, the sense of urgency will be much higher because you need to advance through this race. That means it’s all or nothing,”.
