Chase Elliott has never mixed a single Cup race before the snowboarding accident.

Hendrick Motorsport’s star driver Chase Elliott will mark his return to the Cup series after the tibia injury he suffered in Martinsville. He missed out on 6 Cup races, including a road course race where he has always been a threat. He suffered the freak injury in Colorado while snowboarding and has been recovering from a 3-hour-long surgery.
Elliott has gotten the medical waiver from NASCAR that enables him to race and still qualify for the Chase even after missing 6 races. He just had to win a race, and the rule change that scraped the regulation that states drivers should be placed in the Top 30 on the championship table will also help him. The No:9 team has been working hard to make the return smooth for him, and they used the time they had with Josh Berry and Jordan Tyler behind the wheel wisely.
Elliott said, “The good news is, as Josh [Berry] alluded to, our team is really talented, and we’ve got a great group. I think if we have our ducks in a row and we’re prepared, I think we can go and jump in and have a really solid run. That’s obviously my goal,”.
The 2020 Cup champion is confident that he will be able to work around the challenges and thrive in the weeks to come. Elliott said, “We’ll just have to get up there and see what the challenges are, what they bring, and whatever it is, we’re going to work through it and continue to fight and make the most out of not only this weekend but the weeks to come,”.
Elliott pointed out that he isn’t tense about his playoff eligibility situation, as the 18 races are enough to score a win. He said, “We’re going to have (18 races) to get a win, so we’ve got plenty of time. We’ve just got to get after it and execute at a high level, and I think we’re very capable of doing that,”.

Chase Elliott knows that Martinsville will be tough

The No:9 driver understands that the comeback won’t be an easy task for him. His muscle mass might have been reduced as he didn’t follow his normal fitness routine. He added that though the return will be tough, he is fit enough to overcome the pain.
“I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t going to be tough. It’ll be tough. I sat around and was non-weighting baring for a number of weeks, so when you’re not using a muscle on your body, you lose a large percentage of your muscle mass in just the first couple of weeks. All those things are very normal. So, it’s going to be tough, for sure, but I feel like I’m at the point where I’m comfortable to go do it,” Chase Elliott said.
