Chase Elliott owes Erik Jones big time for his Talladega win

Chase Elliott out-raced Ryan Blaney in the ultimate laps of the race tow in the Talladega playoff race. The regular season champion’s win also marks the first win for a championship chaser this postseason. This is Elliott’s 5th cup race win of the 2022 season.

Chase Elliott was positioned on the bottom lane for the final restart, with just two laps remaining, while race leader Ryan Blaney ahead of him in the same lane. Blaney had a strong start and kept the lead while Erik Jones was fighting for P2. On turn 2 of the first lap, Elliott slid ahead of Jones.

Chase Elliott was shoved By Erik Jones a couple of times. The Chevy partner’s maneuver helped Elliott to have a perfect run on Blaney and eventually secure the lead. Elliott praised Jones for the shoving he gave him in the final laps in his post-race interview.

Chase Elliott was quick to acknowledge the support of the Talladega crowd after the win and he thanked the spectators for being at the track. He said, “Yeah, first, how about these fans, man? That’s unreal. Moments like that, you have to really cherish. You guys are what makes this special to me, so thank you sincerely. I really appreciate it,”.

Chase Elliott said that the last two laps were crazy. He added that he wasn’t pleased with positioning himself at the bottom for the final restart. Elliott said that he was fortunate enough to get ahead of  Erik Jones on turn two. He added that Jones did a great job in shoving him ahead of Ryan Blaney for the win.

Yeah, it was a wild last couple of laps. I wasn’t super crazy about being on the bottom. Fortunately, I got just clear enough off of (turn) two to slide up in front of Erik (Jones). He gave me some great shoves. Obviously, a Team Chevy partner there. Just had a good enough run to get out front and then I was able to stay far enough in front of Ryan (Blaney) here at the line to get it done,” Chase Elliott said.

Chase Elliott went on to thank his team and sponsors for their support. He said, “These things are so, so hard to win. You have to enjoy them. Just appreciate everybody’s effort today. NAPA, Chevrolet, and all of our partners that make this happen. Everybody at Hendrick Motorsports, the engine shop. The boss is here, so excited to celebrate with him; get ready to go to the ROVAL and try to grab another one,”.

Chase Elliott acknowledged that the six playoff points he won are a great deal. He said, “Gets you through the next one. That’s all you can ask for, to have more opportunities. That’s really what this is about. We got six more Playoff points to go with that win today. That’s a big deal.
