Chase Elliott suffered a tibia fracture on Saturday and was forced to undergo a three-hour surgery. The No:9 Hendrick Motorsports driver missed out on the Cup action at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He is expected to miss an indefinite number of races before returning to the race track. In their media briefing about Elliott’s injury on Saturday, HMS officials pointed out that the 2020 Cup champion return has no timeline.

Elliott took it to Twitter to thank the NASCAR community for their support and love. He tweeted, “In all seriousness, the support I’ve received over the last couple of days is far greater than I deserve. I want to thank everyone who has lended it over in any form!  Let’s give Josh Berry and the NAPA Racing team some love today!”

Elliott missed out on a solid race day with HMS as all three teammates were quick on Sunday. They swept the podiums, with William Byron securing the win with Kyle Larson and Alex Bowman finishing P2 and P4, respectively. Elliott, who has been consistent in the first two races, would have been a contender for the win alongside his teammates.

The injury sustained by the most popular driver on the grid has prompted conversation around the possibility of teams restricting drivers from venturing into risky activities. Owner-drivers Denny Hamlin, Brad Keselowski, and Kyle Busch have come forth, slamming such demands, and team owners are not showing any interest in implementing such policies.

Josh Berry, who drives full-time in the Xfinity Series driving for Jr Motorsports, got his maiden Next-Gen car opportunity. He finished two laps down on P29 and failed to impress the team. This might force the team to reconsider their replacement choice for the Phoenix weekend. Unlike his teammates, Berry didn’t also have the best car at his disposal, as No:9 Chevy suffered some throttle issues.

It was eventful, honestly. A couple of things in the first two stages go a little bit better for us, and I think we’re able to stay on the lead lap. We had some good pace a lot of the time, especially when we had some reasonably clear track. We were pretty fast, for all things considered. There was still a lot to learn in those moments and in traffic,” Berry explained his race day.

They were just telling me…we had an issue with the car there at the end that was kind of causing some issues with the throttle and the throttle body. There were some times we were not getting a wide-open throttle, sometimes the throttle was hanging. It was messy there at the end, and I hate that reflects (in the finish) because I started to feel, at the end of the second stage, pretty comfortable,” Josh Berry said about the issue with his car.
