NASCAR legend Clint Bowyer has criticized NASCAR for the lack of severity in Daniel Suarez’s penalty for his pit-lane attics at COTA. The Circuits of the Americas witnessed one of the most chaotic races in the history of NASCAR, and the frustration the chaos produced broke Suarez, one of the softest drivers on the grid. He will have to pay a fine of $50,000.

They were penalized for hunting down Alex Bowman on the pit road. Suarez bumped his former teammate multiple times, and on one of those bumps, could have taken out a NASCAR official, who was directing the cars to the pits,  if Bowman had lost control. The No:99 Trackhouse Chevy driver also bumped his teammate Ross Chastain, who was part of the crash that prompted his finish outside the Top 10.

I think it should have been even steeper. And the reason is because of that official. We all know there’s a safety element to this. What we do on that racetrack is one thing. You’ve got helmets on. You’re contained in safety seats,” Clint Bowyer said.

You see that official highlighted over there. That could have been very, very dangerous and ugly on that behalf. You have to lock this down. This cannot happen on pit road where those officials are after the race,” Clint Bowyer added.

The Mexican was learning about his penalty after COTA and didn’t hessite to express his feelings ahead of the Richmond Cup race. He pointed out that he didn’t do anything wrong and that he was broken cheek by Bowman. He also claimed that the official wasn’t in a dangerous situation. Suarez said that NASCAR fines him for the sake of sending a message.

No, I was not expecting that just because we were running — based on SMT and stuff I saw — below 20 miles per hour. It was very, very slow. And also, the No. 48 car was brake-checking me, so we were not going quick. There was one official there, and that was wrong,” Suarez said.

I was not expecting anything, but it is what it is. NASCAR wants to send a message, and it’s OK. I’m OK with that. It’s not right what I did, but I don’t think that anything else was going to happen. I wasn’t going to kill somebody like a lot of people thought. But it is what it is. I’ve already moved on from that,” Suarez added.
