“Closest I’ve ever been. Man, that was fun,” Corey LaJoie on his Atlanta run that saw him come close to his first career cup race win

The Atlanta Motor Speedway hosted Quaker State 400 Presented by Walmart saw Chase Elliott, who hails from one of the prominent racer families in Georgia, following the paths of his father Bill Elliott, securing the hometown win after 30 since his father’s win, which was also the last time a Georgian won the race. But if not for Chase Elliott in the race, Corey LaJoie who had his best cup outing so far in his career would have won the race.
The No:7 Corey LaJoie of Spire Motorsports, who was seeking to win his first Cup race of the season, was being pursued by Ross Chastain and Chase Elliott with just two laps left in the final restart. Chase Elliott, who was competing in his 96th lap of the 260-lap race, was able to overtake LaJoie on the final lap and keep it by aggressively blocking him. Now Corey LaJoie has come forth expressing his thoughts on how the race turned out for him.
Find out what Corey LaJoie had to say about his Atlanta run
Corey LaJoie pointed out that the Atlanta run was the closest he has ever come to a race win that he had a fun outing and added that he made a move that didn’t work out for him. He went on to add that Chase Elliott made a good block which eventually caused the siren’s ringing in Dawsonville. He added that he wish the No:7 Car would have entered the victory lane and suggested that if they are able to give such consistent performances the time will come for him to one day finish in the victory lane.
“Closest I’ve ever been. Man, that was fun. I made my move and it didn’t work out — he made a good block and the siren’s ringing in Dawsonville, unfortunately. I wish that granny in the front row wouldn’t have been clapping so much — I wish that No. 7 car was in victory lane. But if we race like this more consistently, that time will come,” Corey LaJoie said.
Corey LaJoie went on to say that it was the first time for him to lead a race in the final restart in one of the superspeedways in the cup series. He added that the experience was all new to him as he wasn’t prepared well for such a position to be arcing on and for the drag back and cover runs that comes there in such races for the leader.
“It’s the first time I’ve been leading one of these restarts on one of these superspeedway-style racetracks and how much you have to drag back, cover the runs — it was all new to me, so when I get in that position again I’ll be a little more prepared,” Corey LaJoie added.
Corey LaJoie went on to add that his No:7 team can do a better job next time when he is in the catbird seat, that is in the position where you are throwing blocks contrary to the position he usual y finds himself in that is the position of making a move on the leader. He added that he wishes to see fun runs like this keep coming for the No:7 team in the near future.
“And we can do a little better job and be the one that throws the blocks as opposed to the one that’s trying to make that late-race move because that guy is usually in the catbird’s seat. I was having some fun, I know that. Hopefully, we can have that No. 7 car up front more often,” Corey LaJoie explained.
