Two-time Xfinity Series champion Dale Earnhardt Jr. had admitted that he often forgets to tell fans that the NASCAR grid has the best drivers in the world. The premier stock car racing league has been struggling due to the drop in star value, and Junior believes one way to get the fandom back is to remind them of the Cup drivers’ true ability.
The Hall of Famer was talking to 2014 Cup series champion Kevin Harvick about the star power issue. As the Stewart Haas Racing legend, who retired in 2023, is set to join Dale Jr. as a broadcaster, he was discussing the state of the sport with him with that perspective. Harvick will join Fox Sports in 2024, while Dale Jr. will continue his role at NBC.
Dale Jr., who is arguably the most famous driver in sports history, admitted that he should be discussing the fact that NASCAR has the best racers in the world more often. He might be indirectly suggesting to Harvick that he should also consider doing the same.
I love that it reminds me of just how good they are because we forget to tell people that. You get down the road, and you’re like, man, I haven’t said that these are the best race car drivers in the world in a long time, and I should be saying that more often!Junior said Via Dale Jr. Download (H&T: On3.com)
Driving in the Xfinity Series gave Dale Jr. the realization
Junior, before commenting, explained how he realized that he wasn’t talking about the driver’s prowess enough. When he ran in the Xfinity Series, he made two starts this season for his team, driving the No:88 Chevy of JRM. Junior raced at Bristol and Homestead Miami.
He pointed out that when he got back into the Xfinity Series, he realized the prowess of the racers, and it made him reflect on how much more talented the Cup garage will be. It might encourage Junior to do more on the booth while calling races.
To your point about making them rockstars or telling people they are rockstars, they’re damn good at it. I get in that Xfinity car and I’m reminded immediately these guys are no joke. And imagine the leap to the Cup level, right? Of just talent, with how hard they race, they’re doing it every single week, and all of a sudden you jump on that escalator like ‘Oh s**t, these freaking guys know where they’re going, I gotta figure this out.’
