Disappointing; that’s the word to define Chase Elliott’s season finale at Phoenix

Chase Elliott

Chase Elliott was one of the clear favorites to win the cup title in the season finale at Phoenix. The regular season champions’ pursuit of a second cup title ended abruptly when he was “wrecked” by fellow cup chaser Ross Chastain. The HMS driver was the worst-finishing Championship 4 driver with the P 28.

Chase Elliott and Ross Chastain came in contact with each other on lap 200 restart. Elliott’s effort to block the No:1 car, which was gaining on him via the inside, prompted the wreck. The No:9 car got sent to the wall and suffered severe right-side damage. Elliott failed to regain the pace and balance he had before the spin.

Elliott was utterly disappointed by the wreck that ended his championship hopes. He said,Just disappointed. Obviously, it ended our day and ended our chance at a win or a championship. Just disappointing.”

Chase Elliott pointed out that The No:9 had an impressive run at Phoenix. He said, “I feel like we had gotten it driving about as good as it had been all weekend, honestly. When we split the stage, and some of those guys stayed out and ran long, and we went a lap down and made our lap back up there under green, that runs, I thought our car was driving pretty good,”.

He had a balanced car before the wreck with enough pace. He said, “I was looking forward to seeing if that held true, but from where I saw, obviously, it’s difficult because you don’t have much to gauge off of pace-wise. But I felt like our balance was getting pretty close. That was good,”.

Elliott had his best pit stop of the day in the final restart, but being positioned way behind the front row and having less didn’t do any good for him. He said, “I felt like we just had our best pit stop of the day; guys were rolling there on the pit road. Yeah, I would have loved a shot there at the end, but that’s how it works,”.

Chase Elliott was inconsistent throughout the postseason. He had five finishes outside the top 20 in the ten playoff races, while he finished outside the top 20 just six times in the 26 regular season races. The No:9 team’s failure to transfer their stable season consistency to the playoff led to a disappointing end. He needs to recuperate himself in the off-season, come back strong, and aim for the title in 2023.
